What does it mean when a gemstone is "enhanced"?

Ever since the discovery of gemstones jewelers and stone crafters have worked hard to bring out its natural beauty. This act of treating or “enhancing” the stone allows us to see the stones in a new light. The most basic form of stone treatment is cutting the stone to improve its shape and clarity. In order to create those bright, radiant colors stone workers utilize heat and radiation. The treatment of gemstones has broadened the spectrum of choices for people to choose from and, overall, have made the pieces more affordable. On the other hand it has made rare, natural gemstones harder to come by.

Many of these “enhanced” gems will appear more perfect than a natural stone and not all treatments are permanent. For example, if a stone is covered with oil or wax the stone may only appear extra shiny and flawless for a period of time. That is why it important to do your research, ask your jeweler any questions you may have and know what type of gemstone you are buying.
