We always talk about the unconditional love of motherhood, but the truth is that so much of what we do that somehow ends up looking like an expression of mothering comes from a soup of yes, LOVE, but also a whole bunch of other things that have to do with reconciling our own complex egos to the lifelong work of mothering.
In my experience, there is no love more unconditional than that a child has for their parents. There are few desires stronger and more lasting in a child than to be able to wash us in good light.
We make so many choices in our lives - mostly from the best intentions but often with less than desired results - that cause them confusion, disruption, a sense of helplessness, or downright pain. And even, or especially, as they continue to be subjected to the foibles of our humanness, they want to love us from nothing but love and in so doing teach us what it is to love unconditionally.
Hopefully if we are paying attention, we learn to return it.
Happy Mother's Day to them. Happy Mother's Day for me. <3
