Friendly notice: CHANGE YOUR PASSWORDS. TODAY.

Cloudflare, one of those companies who you never hear about but make up a major chunk of Internet infrastructure, has had a security issue ongoing for several months. This issue caused data that should have been encrypted to be stored, available, and searchable in plain text. This includes the contents of HTTPS requests, meaning passwords, personal information, private messages... lots and lots of stuff is out there.

I cannot stress enough that this is a serious issue and you should CHANGE YOUR PASSWORDS.

Hey lazywebs, who can save me some product research about Google's Project Fi? My parents are asking if it would be a good fit for them in a rural area -- they aren't particularly heavy users of data or voice on their phones and I'd say probably 75% of their use is in their home (with WiFi) anyway.

Is this a good idea for them?

FFS 2016.

Pebble reminds me a lot of Palm. They made something great with a focus on actual use in the real world instead of just banging existing tech together in a box. They struggled in the market for a while other inferior products backed by companies with more money took over the market. Then they got bought by one of the companies that doesn't care about usability but just shoves tech in a box.

(If the parallels to Palm play out, they'll release one more product with some of the core tech, but it will be killed by the parent company the day it is released just to rub salt in the wounds and the cool stuff will vanish forever.)

We had 674 trick-or-treaters last night. Here are a couple of pictures showing the line up the street to the porch and a video showing what it was like during the Plague of Children crushing their way into the crowd for free candy.

For folks who missed out on cheap plastic Halloween costumes in the 80s, feast your eyes on this.

This is a 20 minute recap of a college football game from a hundred years ago. It is enjoyable and entirely worth watching.

(This is one of those things that I find myself saying "No, but really you should check this out even after knowing what it's about, I promise!", much like David Foster Wallace's "Authority and American Usage", a gripping and emotional 62-page review of a dictionary.)

Up front: this is an observation of something I find very interesting rather than a political statement of any kind, positive or negative.

I've been in London for five days now and have not interacted with anyone in a service role (wait staff, ticket takers, cashiers, hotel desk and cleaning staff, etc.) for whom English is their native language[0].

It really prompts a huge series of demographic and sociological questions that I am really fascinated in knowing the answers to and simultaneously have no idea how to even begin researching.

[0]: This is me judging by accent which is obviously error prone, but I'm pretty sure I'm not accidentally catching any e.g. Welsh or Scouse or even Scots accents by mistake.

Security and updating in the Internet of Things currently sucks. I think some of this is lack of tools but mostly lack of education. What do you think?
