The thing about software patents is that users need to be familiar with the programs they are working with. Just like in the real world... the play button, the power button, the telephone symbol.... these are things which represent tasks.
Green means go. Red means stop. The big button is important. A device which maximizes viewing space and has a rectangular screen will be a rectangle. When you hit the edge of something, it stops or bounces off it. To make something bigger, you stretch it out.
Things like the above should never be patentable. Now, if a company wants to patent a system like Siri, that's dooable. However, Siri is a ripoff of the voice recognition system on the Motorola RAZR from 10 years ago.
We need patent reform. Icons and shapes should not be patentable.
