You're quite good at intuiting these sounds. Well done! One thing makes me sad, and that's the use of the word "retarded" in your comments. My beautiful sister, now in her 60s, is a lovely mentally retarded woman, married to a wonderful mentally retarded man. (The word used these days is "intellectually challenged" or "developmentally delayed," but the medical diagnosis in the '50s and the clinical description today is still "mentally retarded.") My sister and brother-in-law live independently and are productive citizens. I often wonder the hurt, the deep pain they feel when they hear or read the word "retarded" used as you have. (I know you do this out of simply not thinking, not cruelty.) Please consider editing your comment. As a professional dialect coach I can assure you you are very good at this and should consider working in language in some way. You understand the power of language, and how its sounds inform perception. Using "retarded" like ths is just as powerful, in an awful way. You do a beautiful job and are a beautiful young woman. Might you remove a single word that is truly ugly, and terribly hurtful, from your page? Let's make it 100% beautiful, might we? Thanks for considering this.
