The ZKM | Karlsruhe is a worldwide unique cultural institution combining art and media technology.
As the “Mecca of media art“ the ZKM has been engaging, since 1999 under the direction of Professor Peter Weibel, with innovations in communication and information technology both in theory and practice.
As a »Noah’s ark of the arts« one of the special areas to which the ZKM is dedicated is the preservation of the audiovisual and digital heritage.
With its two museums and spaces for concerts and events, the “multi-divisional“ house for all art forms that is the ZKM welcomes around 240.000 visitors each year.
The ZKM has displayed exhibitions and artworks of internationally renowned artists such as Olafur Eliasson, Nam June Paik, Bill Viola, Elmgreen & Dragset and Bruce Nauman.
Being housed in the historic building of a former munitions factory built in 1918 the ZKM accommodates besides its two museums centers of research and production as the Institute for Visual Media, the Institute for Music and Acoustics and the Institute for Media, Education and Economics.
