But can the belt really just be friction-less from the orange pulley when there is less tension? Won't the scraping destroy the belt?

Due to elasticity the V-belt always turns back to its original oval shape. There is a open ring (not shown in this video) to hold the belt to some extent (not tightly) when the clutch is disconnected to ensure proper contact with pulleys when clutch is connected again.Mar 22, 2014
