THE OXYGEN OF LIFE - ANTHROPOLOGY many thanks +Matt Hall  #anthropology   #oxygen   #evolution

"It has long puzzled scientists why, after 3 billion years of nothing more complex than algae, complex animals suddenly started to appear on Earth. Now, a team of researchers has put forward some of the strongest evidence yet to support the hypothesis that high levels of oxygen in the oceans were crucial for the emergence of skeletal animals 550 million years ago".

CATALHOYUK - ANTHROPOLOGY many thanks +Archaeology & Arts #anthropology #catalhoyuk #turkey

This lady is the latest big find from Çatalhöyük

Archaeologists working at the Neolithic site of Çatalhöyük (central Anatolia, Turkey ) under the direction of Prof. Ian Hodder found a complete female figurine made of stone, measuring 6.7 inches long (17 cm.) and weighing 2.2 pounds (1 kg).

One of the world's first urban centers which dates back 9,000 years, Çatalhöyük is included in the 2012 UNESCO World Heritage List.

MINOAN ORIGINS - ANTHROPOLOGY many thanks +Ancient Origins  #anthropology   #Crete   #minoan

The #Minoan people of Crete—Europe’s first high civilization—present a mystery that has long perplexed #scholars and inspired much speculation: Where did these people, whose culture and artifacts seemed different than nearby #Greeks, come from? Some have speculated variously on North Africa, Syria, Palestine or the Balkans. However, a study comparing ancient DNA of the people of the Minoan civilization to #DNA of other peoples both ancient and modern has found that they were of European and Anatolian stock.

GARDENS OF PETRA - ANTHROPOLOGY many thanks +Ancient Origins #anthropology #petra

Long forgotten gardens of the amazing city of Petra have been discovered after two thousand years. Wonderful fountains and a huge pool, which were at the heart of the gardens, were supported by advanced irrigation and water storage systems. This enabled the magnificent gardens to exist in the middle of the desert.

NEANDERTHAL JEWELLERY - ANTHROPOLOGY many thanks +Matt Hall  #anthropology   #neanderthal   #jewellery

"A team with members from across Europe has found evidence that suggests bone fragments found with ancient jewelry in the Grotte du Renne cave at Arcy-sur-Cure (in France) show that they were made by Neanderthals. They have published a paper in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences outlining their work, their results, and what their finding may mean regarding the abilities of Neanderthals".

SYPHILIS BEFORE COLUMBUS - ANTHROPOLOGY many thanks +Ancient Origins  #anthropology   #europe   #syphilis

In 1495, a new disease spread throughout #Europe: #syphilis. Christopher Columbus was said to have brought this sexually transmitted disease back from his voyage to America. At least, that has been the accepted theory up until now. However, researchers in Vienna have now identified several cases of congenital syphilis dating back to as early as 1320 AD in skeletons from excavations at the cathedral square of St. Pölten, Austria

DENISOVAN DNA - ANTHROPOLOGY many thanks +Ancient Origins #anthropology #Denisovan #DNA

The #Denisovans are a mysterious hominid species that we only know about from two molar teeth and the bone of a pinky finger discovered in the remote Denisova Cave in the #Altai Mountains of Siberia. However, DNA extracted from the tooth has opened a window in understanding this ancient species and how it impacted the world tens of thousands of years ago. New research now reveals that far from being a small, isolated population, the Denisovans ranged widely across Asia, even persisting for tens of thousands of years alongside Neanderthals and Homo Sapiens, interbreeding with both and creating a complex family tree that scientists are still trying to unravel.

Sadly, now, a rusting hulk but I have good memories of times on this fabulous pier. The old pier 'entrance' is now the #bai360 - flanked by replicas of the original kiosks.

The 'Canary Islands' come to Brighton. Carolina's shop, just opened and the first in the UK, is a delight. An enticing spread of jewellery, art, food and accessories. The ideal gift. Very central - where Stone St meets the top of Preston St.
