We've said it before and we'll say it again: Desktop Server is seriously the best thing ever when it comes to setting up a localhost development environment for WordPress.
Setting up WordPress in a localhost environment can save you a ton of time if you frequently test new designs and go bug hunting, but with its super easy 5 minute setup, DesktopServer definitely tops that. Its quick setup time makes it a winner for seasoned developers who want to get a new site up and running quickly, but it’s also perfect for beginners thanks to its intuitive user experience.

It only took a year (!), but Daniel Pataki has finally let us in on how he builds his development environments for WordPress. And yeah, the title says it all!
Over the past couple of years, I’ve written loads of tutorials here on the WPMU DEV Blog in which I share tidbits about the development environments I use. So today, I thought it’s about time I share a full environment, the kind I would put together and use for larger scale development. Roll up your sleeves and get ready to get your hands dirty! Because below is a full walkthrough of the kind of development environment I set up, and how you do ca...

If you want your online store to succeed in 2017, it's important to understand the latest ecommerce trends and this year's best practices.

The onslaught of political news headlines generated a lot of attention throughout Q4, so it may have been difficult to spot the news that mattered most to retailers. In case you missed it: “Data from the National Retail Federation shows that many consumers no longer find it necessary or appealing to shop in...

WordPress 4.7 introduced some fantastic new UX and UI changes to the Customizer. Here's a walkthrough on how you can customize the new Customizer experience.
WordPress 4.7 was released with a ton of great new features (which you can check out here), including some user experience and user interface upgrades to the theme Customizer. In case you’re hearing about the Customizer for the first time, it’s a feature in the WordPress admin (go to Appearance > Customize) that allows users to tweak theme settings using a WYSIWYG interface and customize a theme’s colors, fonts, text, and pretty much anything els...

So your client is asking for a project proposal before you can get started on their website and you've got... nothing. Before the panic sets in, here's a quick guide to throwing together a proposal that's sure to impress.
Flash proposals – we’ve all sent them. You know, when a potential client wants the next steps, more details, a quote, or maybe even a proposal … and you rush to crank out an email that – you think – is all they need to hire you. Such emails work… sometimes. For example, they could land you small projects, but for the larger projects ones like website, theme, or plugin development, let’s face it, they are not enough. Because clients who are making...
