"Social work professionals' lives are also often touched by the work they perform—but not always in positive ways. While the work can be deeply rewarding in many ways, social workers also often face challenges such as heavy caseloads, traumatic stress, and compassion fatigue."

This article, presented in part by the Department of Health and Human Services, shares some tips for self-care while doing the important but sometimes tiring work of social work.

"[W]e don’t ever assume that just because something is the latest and greatest and works for most of our students — even those with similar disabilities — that it will always be the right or best choice for all students. It still must be very individualized.”

This, and more wisdom about improving learning in differently abled students through the use of technology

As we near the end of our first week of STEM in the City, the Earl Center makes a great case for why STEM camps like this are so important. http://bit.ly/29OWBSw
When people normally think of camps, cabins in heavily wooded areas with children either ducking in-between the trees or roasting marshmallows often springs to mind. However, while these camps still exist, a new kind of camp is becoming prevalent. Science, Technology, Electronics and Mathematics ...

"These standards will help our students think about problem solving in new ways and introduce them to valuable skills they will need in today's economy."

As early as this fall, MA may have new K-12 Standards for Digital Literacy and Computer Science
The education board approved the voluntary standards for use as soon as this fall.

"Before I came here, I didn't think it was possible to be the person I am right now."

Our latest post on the blog follows senior transfer Kyra Thomas as she looks back on how Wheelock has shaped her as a person.

"After the performance, a special education teacher at the school came up to tell me how much her students enjoyed the poem. She said they had never seen anyone speak about learning disabilities during an all-school assembly. I realized that in all my time as a teaching artist, I had never thought to integrate what I know about different learning styles into the lesson plans I create."

The result? A post from alum and current practitioner Lissa Piercy '14 on creating inclusive learning environments for students of varying learning styles. http://bit.ly/29CEBFQ

"I love the idea of summer vacation. It's a wonderful part of our culture and we really think of it, even if we're not experiencing it, as this time of freedom.

And you know parents at every income level want to come home in the long evenings and have that time with their kids and have the lack of scheduling so it is funny you'd think we'd want to do away with it because it's a challenge. But we don't. We just want it to be what we want it to be."
If you've got kids, the summertime costs families who have to look for creative ways to afford it — and not just financially. Research shows lower-income kids typically fall behind over the summer.
