Want to innovate? Become a "now-ist!"

"Education is what people do to you, and learning is what you do to yourself."

"Education is what people do to you, and learning is what you do to yourself."
“Remember before the internet?” asks Joi Ito. “Remember when people used to try to predict the future?” In this engaging talk, the head of the MIT Media Lab skips the future predictions and instead shares a new approach to creating in the moment: building quickly and improving constantly, without waiting for permission or for proof that you have the right idea. This kind of bottom-up innovation is seen in the most fascinating, futuristic projects...

Drug Unlocks Malleable, Fast-Learning, Child-LIke State In Adult Brain

via +Adam Black

A way to revert the adult brain to the "plastic", child-like state that enables fast learning by being able to form new connections quickly has been found. A protein expressed in brain cells called PirB in animals and LilrB2 in humans stabilizes neural connections to protect against loss of learned skills or information, and using a molecule called an ectodomain can interfere with its functioning enabling the more "plastic" fast-learning state to return. Ectodomains are membrane protein that normally extend extends through the membrane of a cell into the extracellular space outside the cell.
Professor Carla Shatz of Stanford University and her colleagues have discovered a way to revert an adult brain to the “plastic”, child-like state that is more able to form new connections quickly.  The technical term “plastic” implies the ability to adapt or shape itself to new conditions.  The striking results were revealed through experiments on …

Was Yahoo! Hacked? #security

It seems Yahoo was the victim of ShellShock. Lycos and WinZip.com were also victims.
Yahoo! Has been HACKED, and all your information with them is now in danger! SEVERE ALERT! Disclosure and disclaimer: This document is being released due to several HIGH profile companies being infiltrated using the recent Shellshock vulnerability, and what I have deemed as an improper response, ...

Android App Indexing for Google Web Search vs HTTPS #security

Google seems run the app using a MITM HTTPS proxy, which we detect as an attack since we use pinning (to our root CA), so then they can't index our app. The Android app uses HTTPS to communicate with the +Eventbrite API.

I wonder why they would be using a MITM HTTPS proxy.

Restricted From Following

This is something I hadn't come across yet, it says that I'm restricted from following somebody who follows me.

Who can shed light on this?

15 very cool browser extensions

Some interesting plugins here, I try to limit the number of extensions as they make my browser run very slow.

Pick out the best and ignore the rest.

Interesting!

Hi,
I am now, finally, more free to speak about what happened in the course, should anyone still care.
I would ask you not to judge by what has been written after I was forbidden to speak, even though I know this is really hard. Most of it is false. No experiment was performed on the students. On the contrary, when I saw deeply disturbing ethical concerns with the Coursera set up (contracts etc), I wanted to have the least possible to do with it and pulled out the content. I still kept an opportunity for students to engage with me through the technical forums.
If you have questions, feel free to ask me here or on my blog, where I have posted some of the material for week 3 of the course, that I was never allowed to deliver:
http://paulolivier.dehaye.org
Because there is other stuff, you might want to focus on the coursera category, which includes a more detailed discussion of the contracts:

A friend send me to Markus to have my picture taken as a present, and what a present. The shots he made were amazing. He made me feel at ease and got me to make faces into the camera. It was so much fun!

After spilling beer on my laptop Mac Assist told me I would probably need to have my keyboard replaced. He advised me to use the services of a competitor, as they would probably have the parts in stock and he would need to order them, which would mean it would take longer. Not many companies are this honest, and put customer service ahead of earning money. Great service!
