Researchers find that many Android VPNs are security hazards, reveal the ten worst offenders

Security researchers tested 283 VPN apps from Google’s Play Store. The results showed that 38 percent of them contained some form of adware, malvertising, trojan, riskware, or spyware. Additionally, 67 percent featured at least one third-party tracking library and 82 percent request permissions to access sensitive data, including user accounts and text messages.

Mozilla Firefox is now flagging the popular Web of Trust (WOT) browser add-on as suspicious and is disabling it by default. "Versions 20170120 and lower of the Web of Trust add-on send excessive user data to its service, which has been reportedly shared with third parties without sufficient sanitization. These versions are also affected by a vulnerability that could lead to unwanted remote code execution."

Google has banned 200 publishers since it passed a new policy against fake news

Google routinely weeds out “bad ads.” Now it weeds out more bad ad publishers, too. The company banned the publishers from its AdSense network, an ad placement service that automatically serves text and display ads on participating sites based on its audience. The ban was part of an update to an existing policy that prohibits sites that mislead users with their content.
