On this day in 1980, Mt. St. Helens erupted. The blast removed 1300 feet from the top of the volcano, flattened trees as far as 19 miles away, and produced a scene of complete devastation within an 8-mile radius. The ash column reached a height of 16 miles and was dispersed by high-altitude winds, darkening skies in Yakima and Spokane to nighttime conditions. Within 24 hours, the eruption ended, but ash from the eruption circled the globe for weeks. #earthsci #volcano

On April 12, 1955, the Salk vaccine was announced to be “safe, effective, and potent,” setting off a chain of events that would lead to the virtual elimination of polio from the United States and much of the developed world. Polio, or poliomyelitis, is an infectious viral disease that attacks nerve cells and the central nervous system, causing muscle wasting, paralysis and even death. Before 1950, the disease affected tens of thousands of victims, perhaps the most famous of which was Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the 32nd president of the United States.
Salk's vaccine is an example of an inactivated vaccine. It is made by growing virulent polio virus in tissue culture, then treating the virus with formaldehyde so that it cannot reproduce in the person who receives the vaccine. Salk’s polio vaccine was so groundbreaking that within one month of its public release 4,000,000 doses had been administered, and 450,000,000 had been administered within its first four years. Several years after its discovery, the Salk vaccine was replaced by the Sabin vaccine. The Sabin vaccine is more effective as it is made from a live but weakened polio virus, and it gained widespread use because it could be administered orally, while Salk's vaccine required injection. #medicine

The botanist Matthias Jakob Schleiden was born in Hamburg, Germany on April 5th 1804. Unlike his contemporaries who simply classified plants according to their physical characteristics, Schleiden studied them with a microscope. As a result, Schleiden was the first person to recognize the importance of cells in plants, first discovered by Robert Hooke in 1655. Schleiden observed that all plants seemed to be composed of cells, and he proposed that these cells were the most basic unit of life in the plants. He proposed that plant growth took place by the generation of new cells, which, he argued, would propagate or ‘crystallize’ from buds on the nucleus of old cells. Although later work would show his proposal regarding the budding of the cell nucleus was not completely correct, his theories that the cell was the common structural unit to all plants, and that growth occurred by the addition of new cells, attracted significant attention. A year after Schleiden published his cellular theory of plants in Beiträge zur Phytogenesis (Contributions of Phytogenesis) in 1838, his friend and collaborator Theodor Schwann made similar observations in animals. Together, Schleiden and Schwann unified botany and zoology under a common theory that the cell is the basic structural unit of living organisms, both animal and plant. As a result, the two are considered the founders of modern cell theory. #science #botany
