A smack of #jellies  surround a member of the Aquarium dive team in the chilly #Arctic waters of Cambridge Bay. This summer, scientists from the Vancouver Aquarium head north for innovative Arctic research projects both below and above the ocean’s surface in collaboration with Polar Knowledge Canada (POLAR), the new federal agency responsible for advancing Canada’s knowledge of the Arctic and for strengthening Canadian leadership in polar science and technology.

This is why it is so important to follow boating safety guidelines for whale watching. If you see #whales, turn off your motor and stay 100 metres back at all times. #ocean   #killerwhales   #conservation

This beautiful shot at twilight comes to us from Cambridge Bay, Nunavut where a team of divers from the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Science Centre is collecting baseline data from the surrounding waters. For a week, they will conduct a near-shore ecological survey to catalogue the animals, geological features and water conditions. This information will be shared with other scientists visiting the region in the future. This project is being done in partnership with Polar Knowledge Canada (POLAR) and the Canadian High Arctic Research Station (CHARS).

Kids draw, we animate.

Heart-headed sea dragon (Draco corcaputi) BODY LENGTH: to 8.3 m HABITAT: open ocean (pelagic) DESCRIPTION: Beyond its heart-shaped head, this shark is known for its big, serrated teeth – perfect for tearing away at flesh. Like other sharks, it has electroreceptors on its head that detect the movements of animals kilometres away. The horn-like appendages protruding from its head contain a concentration of these sensitive pores, allowing it to hone in on anything, and everything, in its path.

Come draw your own monster during Sea Monsters Revealed: The Exhibition, on now at the Vancouver Aquarium until September 7th. #SeaMonstersRevealed
