THE PRESIDENT'S MACE
The University President’s Mace is a heavy staff made of wood and metal graced by the seal of the University of the Philippines on the obverse and a torch on the reverse.

It symbolizes the authority of the University President and is carried by the Secretary of the University during academic processions.

The same mace will be used on the Investiture of the 21st President of the University of the Philippines, Atty. Danilo L. Concepcion. Members of the UP community are invited to attend on September 20, 5PM at the University Theater. In college at UPLB, Dupo took up agriculture and majored in entomology. Her thesis was about derby spiders or spiders used in spider fights or spider wrestling, a pastime and form of gambling in the Philippines. She studied the fighting behavior of these “eensy weensy” creatures, trying to decipher if they are fiercer when famished or when they had just hatched their eggs.

Every Friday, students of the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman steel themselves for the last classes of the week. For most sophomore engineering and math majors, one of the day’s toughest hurdles is Math 54 — advanced calculus.

Joining them is 8-year-old Io Aristotle Nikolai Calica, who shows up with a notebook that has Superman on the cover, doodles on the margins, and penciled solutions for the square roots of one to 500 million on the pages.
