The Pelikula Lektura: UP Film Institute Philippine Cinema Centennial Lecture Series supported by the Film Development Council of the Philippines continues with the former Dean of the UP College of Mass Communication and the current director of the UP Institute of Creative Writing Dr. Rolando B. Tolentino—February 28, 2019 (Thursday) 9:30 AM at the UPFI Film Center – Cine Adarna in UP Diliman.

Admission is FREE and open to the public. Certificates will be awarded to non-UP Film Institute students and only upon request.

“Resist!—Anthems of Struggle and Triumph” will be the fiery opening salvo of the 2019 Abelardo Hall Concert Series. The four-month-old University of the Philippines Symphony Orchestra (UPSO) will make its Abelardo Hall debut on February 23 at 7:00 PM, together with the UP Madrigal Singers, pianist Pia Dino-Balasico, and playwright-singer Rody Vera. They will perform under the baton of UPSO musical director Prof. Josefino Chino Toledo.

The University of the Philippines hosts the 2nd International ASEAN University Network – Health Promotion Conference this Aug. 20-21, 2019 in Manila. The conference, with its theme of “Moving Towards Healthy Universities in Asia,” aims to highlight the roles of universities in promoting healthy lifestyles and environments with the end-goal of empowering communities to embark on activities and programs that promote health. Success stories and challenges will be presented and strategies discussed in the context of local communities and universities. The conference is open to participants both in the ASEAN region and all over the world. Everyone is invited to join this conference and become active in health promotion in their own communities!

In commemoration of the 35th anniversary of the split of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) and the tri-college PhD program in Philippine Studies, a revisiting of history and exhibit launch entitled Pagsasangang-Dunong was held at the Palma Hall (PH) Lobby, Feb. 12.

In her opening message, Prof. Amihan Bonifacio-Ramolete, PhD, dean of the College of Arts and Letters (CAL), alluded pagsasangang-dunong (branching of knowledge) with the split of CAS into now CAL, College of Social Sciences (CSSP) and College of Sciences (CS) in 1983. Bonifacio-Ramolete is a product of both CAL and CSSP.

UP High School in Iloilo alumni were recently appointed by the Commission on Appointments as ambassadors on February 6, 2019.

Noel Eugene Eusebio Mejico Servigon was appointed ambassador to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in Jakarta, Indonesia. Noe Albano Wong was appointed as ambassador to South Korea.

This year’s founding anniversary celebration of the Laguna-Quezon Land Grant (LQLG) on Feb. 8 showed that the plans articulated in its past celebrations have started to become reality for the 6,765-hectare property.

An audio-visual presentation entitled “Plant diversity assessment of the UP Sierra Madre Land Grant” highlighted the results of a biodiversity survey conducted in the LQLG, which revealed the significant presence of red lauan, a critically endangered tree species that could be conserved in its forest.

#UPShakeDrill Thursday: The University of the Philippines System will join the Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill on Thursday, February 21. The drill will simulate a large magnitude earthquake and all constituent universities are encouraged to conduct related activities. All units are requested to document their NSED activities and submit to the UP Resilience Institute.

UPLB continues to explore and welcome international partnerships and welcomed one such opportunity with World Bank and the Ministry of Agriculture of Mozambique, a country in southern Africa.

Chancellor Fernando C. Sanchez, Jr. received at his office a delegation from Mozambique led by Dr. Olga Lurdes Fafetine, director general of the Mozambique Institute of Agricultural Research, to discuss possible collaborations in agriculture, natural resources, and economics on Feb. 6.
