Alison South, volunteer for UCL Museums, regularly visits patients at UCH’s Teenage Cancer Trust Unit to offer museum object handling sessions.

“Some on the ward refer to me as the ‘fossil lady’ or the ‘museum lady’ – I prefer to think of myself as a sort of therapeutic ‘bag lady’, holding tight my precious possessions.”

Vaseem Khan, staff member at UCL Security and Crime Science, has been named as one of six writers to look out for by the Evening Standard.

His murder mystery novel ‘The Unexpected Inheritance of Inspector Chopra’ follows a detective and his baby elephant crime-fighting partner.

“[Working in UCL Security and Crime Science] I have DNA experts, a gun-crime expert, a labour-trafficking specialist, even a former Indian police officer – when I was stumped, there’d always be someone to enlighten me.”

“Bentham’s Farm is a student-run, student-founded allotment that is open to all UCL students. We meet on a weekly basis to tend to the farm, growing a diverse range of produce using organic methods.

“I think connecting with the land is a very necessary part of life, and something that a lot of us lack the opportunity to experience. Hopefully, with projects like this, cities will start filling with vegetables again!”

To celebrate 150 years of UCL's academic relationship with Japan, we recently held a 'Pioneers for the Future' workshop, bringing together a group of Japanese high school students with their UCL Academy counterparts.

During the workshop, cartoon artist Sidsel Sorenof produced a visualisation of the historic moment when the first Japanese students arrived at UCL.

2015 marks ten years since former Olympic champion Christine Ohuruogu (BA Linguistics) graduated from UCL. This weekend she returns to Beijing, the scene of her Olympic gold medal in 2008, to begin the defence of her current 400 metres world title – best of luck, Christine!

“Autism is commonly, if mistakenly, associated more with logical thinking than creative expression. But we might need to rethink our views on creativity and autism.”

Dr Anna Remington (UCL Institute of Education) comments on new research by the universities of East Anglia and Stirling, which suggests that common views on autism are mainly based on stereotypes.
