Our Veterinary Nursing students and lecturing staff are heading off to Tonga, where they’ll be setting up a temporary veterinary clinic on the main island of Tongatapu and will visit a number of smaller villages.

As part of their studies, they’ll be tasked to work alongside South Pacific Animal Welfare (SPAW), to de-sex, vaccinate, and help treat injuries of hundreds of animals.

“They are doing more practical tasks and getting more experience in the week they are in Tonga than they would normally from a whole year of work placements.” – Laura Harvey, Environmental and Animal Sciences lecturer. http://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/ED1611/S00134/unitec-students-help-staff-temporary-vet-clinic-in-tonga.htm

With the increasing demand for construction workers by 2020, the industry currently seeks to bridge the shortage gap by encouraging, training and employing more women in construction and other trades roles.
Te Mihikura Pene, an apprentice electrician - and soon to be starting with us as an electrical student - enjoys the challenge and hands-on work she gets to do in electrical, and would encourage other women to pursue a career in a building trade.

We’ve redefined what a classroom can be, so when you study here, you might be under a car, beneath the ocean, or deep in the forest. Because in this day and age, anywhere can be a classroom.

At Unitec we believe in thinking and doing and that learning is not only through traditional lectures. And that’s why we approach learning differently through taking practical skills out to industry. Find out more at http://www.unitec.ac.nz/studyin2017/
