Around the world today, millions of women and girls are facing inequalities at work, at home, and at school, just because of their gender, and are thus unable to reach their full potential.

We must be relentless in our shared efforts and collective action to protect the human rights of every woman and girl, including her right to receive equal pay, participate more fully in society and access education, including comprehensive sexuality education. Because when women and girls are empowered, there is no limit to what we all can achieve together.

This mother and her baby are among the thousands of women and children in South Sudan who are benefitting from the lifesaving care of UNFPA-supported United Nations volunteer midwives amidst the ongoing violence.

As one midwife put it: “I feared for my life, but I owed it to my community to ensure continuity of service.” We salute all the midwives and health workers who put their lives on the line every day in order to provide urgent medical care in humanitarian and conflict settings.

“The radio is my life. When I speak, I'm being the motivation of other young people”

Like millions of young men and women today, John is not comfortable with accepting the status quo. Instead, he is using his platform to advocate for youth issues. Wherever you are, say or do something to help transform your community and bring about the change you would like to see in the world.

“I want to do what I like, with no need [for excuses].”

Valeriia is a 12-year-old girl in Ukraine who tells it like it is. Teenage girls around the world need to know that their value is not determined by their bodies, but by their ideas, beliefs, and actions. It’s our shared responsibility to ensure that we don’t limit girls from reaching their full potential, but instead provide them with the ability to define their lives themselves. Like this post if you agree!

“We as young people must advocate for measures to avoid and prevent HIV and collaborate with fellow advocates and government,” declared a young person from Uganda.

During the International AIDS Conference 2016 in Durban, South Africa, this week, 52 young people from 15 different countries across Africa came together to show the commitment of young people to achieving an AIDS free generation.

As the conference comes to an end today, we reaffirm our commitment to being an advocate that delivers real change by integrating HIV/AIDS into our work to achieve universal access to sexual and reproductive health care.

“Together, we sing and make music. This shared experience makes me feel whole again,” says 15-year- old Rania (far right)

Rania is one of 400,000 Syrian youth (15-24 years old) currently living as refugees in Turkey. After losing her cousin to the war in Syria, Rania is now using music to help herself and other refugees find strength and hope at a UNFPA-supported women’s community centre.

On ‪#‎MaternalMonday‬, we’re celebrating the joy of safe birth!
Every woman deserves to get the adequate maternal health care she needs during pregnancy and childbirth, including skilled attendance at birth and emergency back up from health workers, such as doctors, nurses or midwives.

As we work to make motherhood safer for millions of women around the world, the life of every woman who survives childbirth is worth celebrating and we look forward to sharing some of these stories with you.

“Moving from Damascus to Iraq hasn’t stifled my ambitions as a clothes designer. I have established my own tailor shop here.”

Mona is not only a refugee, she's the definition of a girl boss! The conflict in Syria forced Mona to flee her home, but it has not stopped her from chasing her dreams. Meanwhile, in her free time, Mona is a volunteer social worker and she helps out in the centre’s tailoring classes.

"My dream is to see Gabriel walking, talking and running," says 30-year-old Greicy, who was diagnosed with Zika in her first trimester.

In Brazil, the country worst affected by the Zika virus, we are working to improve women’s access to reproductive health – including referrals to specialized care for pregnant women with Zika.

To create a more equitable world, men and boys must meet women and girls in the middle.

It’s no secret that gender equality cannot be achieved without the involvement of men and boys. But how exactly can we put this idea into practice? One powerful way is to increase men’s comfort with seeing themselves as responsible, caring, and non-violent partners.

When we encourage men and boys to reflect upon and discuss issues surrounding masculinity, relationships and sexuality, we can help dismantle the negative, high-risk and sometimes harmful attitudes that continue to stand in the way of change.

Introduction
UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, is an international development agency that promotes the right of every woman, man and child to enjoy a life of health and equal opportunity. UNFPA supports countries in using population data for policies and programmes to deliver a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth safe and every young person's potential is fulfilled.
