“Population is not about numbers; it’s about people; it’s about equity, opportunity and social justice. In any country you go to, from the developed to the developing, the questions of equitable access to resources and opportunities always confront us.”- Babatunde Osotimehin, UNFPA Executive Director.

Giving birth to Magalhães nearly cost Ms. Basílio her life. In her remote village in Cabo Delgado, women with labour complications have to go a long way for help.

Although Ms. Basílio and Magalhães survived, many are not so lucky. The maternal mortality rate in Mozambique is 408 deaths per 100,000 live births, but in Cabo Delgado the rate is 822 per 100,000 live births.

See how we're bringing lifesaving reproductive health care to remote areas of Mozambique to ensure that no ...woman in Cabo Delgado goes through the same near-death experience as Ms. Basílio: bit.ly/1KoS3Kx

Alimanda holds her newborn daughter in their tent at the Marka Camp in Malawi, where hundreds of thousands of people have been affected by flooding.

Alimanda was 8 months pregnant when she woke to the roar of floodwater rushing into her home and she had to climb into a nearby tree with her four children to survive.

In response to the flooding, we delivered clean delivery kits to health staff and pregnant women, including Alimanda, whose friends used the kit to help her deliver : bit.ly/1Hs7pQg

We have a long history of seeking innovative and cutting-edge approaches in our delivery of a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every birth is safe, and every young person's potential is fulfilled.

Currently, we are testing #innovative  projects in more than 20 countries that range from harnessing big data for development ; developing mobile apps with young people to improve their access to sexual and reproductive health; and exploring innovative financing mechanisms.

Bruce Campbell, Global Coordinator of UNFPA’s Data for Development platform and sponsor of our innovation initiative shares with +Devex  how UNFPA is responding to the call to innovate: bit.ly/1d9JEja
