Access to safe, voluntary #familyplanning is a human right. It is central to #genderequality and women’s empowerment, and a key factor for reducing #poverty.

To help improve access to family planning in remote #Laos, we have trained hundreds of community-based distributors like Agnod to provide access to contraceptives and family planning information.

“When I was 9 years old, my mother told me that three of her sisters died because her grandmother practiced female genital mutilation (FGM)”- Patricia Tobon Yagarí, an Emberá indigenous lawyer from #Colombia recalls a childhood memory.

#FGM was thought to have been eradicated in the Emberá community. But, in 2007, Patricia and the majority of the Colombian population were shocked when the story of a newborn Emberá girl dying from complications caused by FGM made the national news.

Unlike in similar cases, this time the doctor who treated her broke the silence and reported it: http://bit.ly/1QtZWjh

Join us to congratulate Diana Kendi Makale from #Kenya for winning the first Efua Dorkenoo Pan African Award for Reportage on Female Genital Mutilation (#FGM). As the winner of the award, Diana will be trained for one month at The Guardian’s FGM Multimedia and Investigations Unit in #London!

Created in partnership with The Guardian, the award was named after Efua Dorkenoo, a determined Ghanaian campaigner against FGM who fought for over 30 years to protect the #health and #humanrights of girls and women. More than 90 journalists from 20 African countries submitted entries in Arabic, English and French.

Thanks to all the applicants for their entries, and we look forward to your participation next year. Together, we can #EndFGM!

“The day before I was discharged by the midwife, my daughter was circumcised. She is now three weeks old.”

In #Indonesia, the practice of Female Genital Mutilation is centuries old, and although no religion promotes or condones #FGM, many people, like Rosa, mistakenly believe the procedure is a dictate of their religion: http://bit.ly/1S0Q9GU

Ahead of the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation on 6 February, share this post to help ensure that no religious doctrine may continue to be used as an excuse to justify this #humanrights violation.

“Never has the international community raised so much money on a single day for a single crisis” – +United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon

A record $10 billion was pledged in #humanitarian aid to address the #SyriaCrisis at last week’s #Syria Donors Conference in #London: http://bit.ly/1SkbmvR

Thank you to everyone who helped promote our call to action and joined the conversation using #SupportSyrians. We look forward to scaling up our work to safeguard #maternalhealth and prevent gender-based violence inside Syria and other countries affected by the crisis.

Girls and young women rarely have opportunities to act as leaders or as advocates. Yet, for many girls, adolescence marks an accelerating trajectory into inequality.

As we move towards achieving +The Global Goals, increasing girl-centered programming and promoting transformative policies that advance #genderequality can help rewrite the future for millions of girls around the world.

Like this post if you support the #education, engagement and #empowerment of adolescent girls.

“When we left Syria, we had nothing to eat. We ate hunger, and we used to hear about kidnapping and rape all the time. I thought Haneen would be safe if she got married.”

Out of fear of no longer being able to feed his 11 children, Haneen’s father married her off. He realized how wrong he was, when, three months later, Haneen called him, and through her tears, told him that she had tried to commit suicide twice and that her husband regularly beat and mistreated her. Also, at barely 14, she said that she was pregnant.

As the #SyriaCrisis continues to deteriorate, girls are marrying at younger and younger ages.

NABATIEH, Lebanon – In late 2013, Haneen, now 14, fled Syria with her parents and 10 siblings. As her family made its way to the Turkish border, her father sustained injuries that left him paralyzed. Fearing he could no longer feed his 11 children or protect his daughters, he married Haneen, then 13, off to a middle-aged Turkish man. The family didn’t even know his name. “When we left Syria, we had nothing to eat. We ate hunger, and we used to he...

Together with the +United Nations Foundation, we are putting smiles on the faces of thousands of #adolescent girls in #India through the Action for Adolescent Girls (AAG) initiative.

Led by peer educators, groups of adolescent #girls in the #Udaipur district of #Rajasthan meet to discuss matters related to their social, health and financial #empowerment. They engage in games, discussions, and other activities that empower them to challenge deep-rooted gender stereotypes with resolve, courage and conviction.

By motivating more friends to join them, the adolescent girls who are a part of the AAG initiative are touching the lives of many others in their community and becoming champions of #change.

“Protecting the rights of women and young people and putting an end to gender-based violence is everyone’s responsibility.”

As leaders meet in #London for the #Syria Donors Conference, Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin is appealing to the international community to support our lifesaving #humanitarian work to protect the #health and #humanrights of #Syrian women and #adolescent girls: http://bit.ly/1PWtc7J

Increased public awareness of global issues often leads to greater political support to address them, so make sure you join the conversation using #SupportSyrians. Millions of women and girls are counting on your support.

We are closely monitoring the outbreak of the #ZikaVirus and warning about its potentially adverse effects on the #health of women and babies, particularly in #LatinAmerica.

Women and girls should be able to make informed decisions about their reproductive health and #familyplanning methods, and to protect themselves and their babies if they decide to be pregnant. We will continue to lead efforts to promote widespread information about the virus and about voluntary family planning. Together, we can defeat #Zika: http://bit.ly/1THfa9X
