“We are looking for your men. Do not run,” Zainab remembers the gunmen saying when they stormed her village. Even so, they began capturing women and children as well.

After being captured from their homes, violently abused and, in many cases, starved almost to death, survivors of the Boko Haram insurgency have begun the long process of healing.

On 3 May, some 275 survivors of kidnapping were transferred to the Malkohi displacement camp in Yola, Adamawa State. With support from the Government of Japan, we have been providing psychosocial support and sexual and reproductive health care to those affected by the insurgency: bit.ly/1IOXZir

Most maternal deaths can be avoided – let’s do it and end preventable maternal mortality (‪#‎EPMM‬)!

It has been 1 year since the ‪#‎EveryNewborn‬ Action Plan to end preventable deaths was passed at the 68th World Health Assembly . We worked with +World Health Organization (WHO) and the +Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health on this year’s upcoming #EveryNewborn event on Tuesday, May 19th.

Stay tuned as we share insights from next Tuesday's event on how to end preventable maternal deaths.

Midwives save lives, it’s that simple!

Yet, there are massive midwife shortages around the world, even in the Asia and Pacific region. The number of deliveries attended by skilled health workers is unacceptably low: from 79% in South-East Asia and 74% in the Pacific, to only 51% in South Asia.

Check out this special video on midwifery by our UNFPA Asia and the Pacific Regional Office to learn more.

“I loved school and didn’t want to let the discrimination of neighbors come in my way,” Carleta Eugenio Francisco told us.

Once isolated and stigmatized in her Mozambican community for suffering from the effects of fistula, Carleta has now reclaimed her life and is advocating for safe motherhood as a community activist.
As we prepare to mark the Int'l Day to End Fistula this Saturday, join our Campaign to End Fistula and be inspired by Carleta's remarkable story: bit.ly/1AmrbdK

Conditions remain harsh for Nepal quake survivors.

“Personal hygiene and safety together help restore a sense of dignity.” - Sita Paudel, a paralegal and local hero who helped distribute our trademark dignity kits to women and girls in her community.

Monsoon season is expected to start in only a few weeks, and will likely worsen conditions for an estimated 8 million people affected by the earthquake, including some 126,000 pregnant women and girls. We are on the ground in the... 14 worst-affected districts providing drugs, equipment and supplies to support their sexual and reproductive health needs: bit.ly/1IHAmIv

In conservative communities of southern Chad, a bold radio show is bringing sex-related issues to the airwaves.

“With the community radio, young people are getting the necessary information on family planning, HIV/AIDs and other issues, and they are talking about these things more openly,” says Ms. Mathurina Yanlom, a 20-year-old regular listener of Radio Tob.

We're supporting Radio Tob and over 30 other radio stations in Chad to bring sexual and reproductive health to a wide...r audience: bit.ly/1cUTdmd

They called it the "Mother Stealer". It came to their homes in this remote part of northern Ethiopia, and claimed the lives of women in childbirth.

Nowadays Ethiopian mothers and pregnant women can sleep better, but a lot remains to be done to defeat the "Mother Stealer" once and for all: http://bit.ly/1Ip3OkW

Happy International Day of the Midwife!

“I have seen more and more women with child-delivery problems suffer needlessly,” said midwife Florence Djihoun, 48, at her UNFPA-supported clinic in Cotonou, Benin.

Midwives could help avert millions of maternal and newborn deaths. We support training for thousands of midwives across the globe each year, including in Benin, where the maternal mortality ratio is 340 per 100,000 live births: bit.ly/1IGjAZ2

Introduction
UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, is an international development agency that promotes the right of every woman, man and child to enjoy a life of health and equal opportunity. UNFPA supports countries in using population data for policies and programmes to deliver a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth safe and every young person's potential is fulfilled.
