#PrinceAlbert was born #OnThisDay in 1819. He was the husband and Prince Consort of #QueenVictoria. Albert initially felt constrained by his position as consort but over time he lent his support to many public causes, such as educational reform and the worldwide abolition of slavery, and took on the responsibilities of running the Queen's household, estates and office. He was Chair of #Parliament's Fine Arts Commission that oversaw the creation of art for the new Palace of Westminster in 1847. He died in 1861 http://goo.gl/cmt689

Cosmetic companies should be banned from using plastic #microbeads in bathroom products - like exfoliating scrubs, toothpaste and shaving gel - because of the marine #pollution they are causing, the cross-party Environmental Audit Committee has demanded. Committee Chair Mary Creagh MP said "Most people would be aghast to learn that their beauty products are causing this ugly pollution. Cosmetic companies need to come clean and label their products containing plastics clearly." Read the report http://goo.gl/CqkZjs

“I have made mistakes, but in all I did my object was the public good.”
Lord John Russell was born #OnThisDay in 1792. He was #PrimeMinister from 1846 to 1852 and 1865 to 1866. Russell was the principal architect of the #GreatReformAct in 1832 and was one of the main promoters of parliamentary reform in the nineteenth century. As Home Secretary, he reduced the number of criminal offences punishable by death, so that only murder and high treason could be punished by execution. http://goo.gl/sXuOSd

Sir #RobertWalpole was born #OnThisDay in 1676. He was ‪#PrimeMinister‬ from 1721 to 1742 and is often viewed as the first British Prime Minister. He was First Lord of the Treasury for over twenty years and played an important role in restoring government credit after the the South Sea bubble financial crisis. Walpole lived in 10 #DowningStreet from 1735 having insisted that it become the residence of the First Lord of the Treasury, rather than being given to him personally. http://goo.gl/DmAudb

The Committee says these networks like #Facebook, #Twitter and #YouTube have become "the vehicle of choice in spreading propaganda and the recruiting platforms for terrorism". That's it blame the messenger. Of course it is nothing to do with your foreign policy, bombing their countries or supplying arms. You are the extremists, stop trying to blame others for what you have created. I am not fooled for a second. 😠 😭 😤

When architect #CharlesBarry won the competition to build a new Houses of #Parliament he thought it was the chance of a lifetime. It swiftly turned into the most nightmarish building programme of the 19th century. ‘Mr Barry's War’ by Historian Caroline Shenton tells the story of how the greatest building programme in Britain for centuries produced the world's most famous secular cathedral to democracy. http://goo.gl/lNinyl

The #Parliament Act 1911 had a profound effect on Parliament and politics in the 20th century. It followed the constitutional crisis which had begun in November 1909 when the Conservative-dominated House of #Lords rejected the Liberal #Government's 'People's Budget’. In the two general elections that had followed in 1910 the issue of the House of Lords had dominated debate. The Parliament Bill sought to remove the power of the House of Lords to reject money bills, and to replace the Lords’ veto over other public bills with the power of delay. In addition, it was proposed to reduce the maximum duration of a Parliament from seven years to five. The Parliament Act was passed by the House of Lords by a 131-114 vote #OnThisDay in 1911. http://goo.gl/3X7KyX
