Now that the UK has voted to leave the #EU what will happen next? When the UK government starts to negotiate the withdrawal process the current situation in a range of policy areas – from fisheries to human rights – is likely to change. On Thursday 10 November the UK Parliament is hosting a conference, aimed at academics, to discuss the impact of #Brexit. https://goo.gl/T3hCUU
This conference is an opportunity to hear from academics working in your policy areas and build relationships with specialists from other Libraries and institutions.

The UK government must move quickly to set out a realistic timetable for delivering #HS2 and clarify important details about its second phase and plans for the wider rail network reports the Public Accounts Committee. Meg Hillier MP, Chair of the Committee, said: "The Government has promised significant benefits to taxpayers in return for their investment in HS2, expected to run to more than £55 billion. Despite this, UK Parliament and the public are still in the dark about crucial details – not least when the railway will open, how much it is expected to cost and precisely where it will go.

I have always had a bad feeling about this project. Is it that important to shave half an hour off journey times to the Midlands at such an immense cost?
Or is it just that without huge infrastructure projects funded by ourselves as taxpayers the capacity to undertake this type of activity is lost?
Another viewpoint is that it keeps a hell of a lot of people employed, but at what cost in terms of ripping up yet more of the countryside?

The Transport Committee warned the UK government that they should not proceed with 'all lane running' schemes while major safety concerns exist. The Committee argued that the permanent conversion of the hard shoulder into a running lane is a radical change to the nature of #motorways and creates a real challenge for motorists. However, Ministers seem determined to press ahead with the latest design of all lane running schemes, ignoring the concerns expressed by MPs and other motoring organisations. Andrew #BonarLaw was born #OnThisDay in 1858. He was #PrimeMinister from 1922 to 1923 following the collapse of the coalition government under David Lloyd George. Law’s 'Tranquillity Manifesto’ was an attempt to allow Britain to recover from war damage. Though elected, he lasted just 209 days in office. He resigned in May 1923 due to ill health, and died of throat cancer 6 months later. http://goo.gl/mQntWv

Everyone involved in protecting children must be made aware of, and prevent, female genital mutilation (#FGM), a form of child abuse when practiced on girls reports the Home Affairs Select Committee. The duty on front line professionals to report incidences of FGM must be enforced with stronger sanctions. The Committee says it is "beyond belief" that 30 years after FGM was made illegal in the UK there has been not one successful prosecution: a "lamentable record" that will deter those brave enough to come forward to report and address this violent crime. The Committee says that the ongoing failure to bring a successful prosecution for FGM is a "national scandal that is continuing to result in the preventable mutilation of thousands of girls".
