#UCDavisResearch is helping prevent the next Ebola by catching new viruses before they break out. Jonna Mazet, Professor of Epidemiology and Disease Ecology and Director of the One Health Institute at UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, has helped identify more than 800 new animal viruses, and is leading the effort to identify human infections by new animal viruses. #OneHealth
With the Ebola outbreak not yet behind us, global health workers are already scrambling to prevent what could be the next big outbreak of an emerging disease caused by a virus that jumped from animals into humans. In Tanzania, an organization is trying a new approach to tracking these new viruses and preventing another pandemic. #

UC Davis‬ is ranked 14th among large schools in producing Peace Corps volunteers! There are 41 Aggie alums currently serving abroad. For Congressman John Garamendi, a Peace Corps alumnus, this comes as no surprise: “UC Davis instills in students a sense of purpose. It helps them develop skills to pursue their dreams. It is no surprise then that so many Aggies would join the Peace Corps where they can put these ideas into practice, where they can serve our nation by working with communities around the world."

The FIRST project to sequence whole genomes from mountain gorillas reveals that many harmful genetic variations have been removed from the population through inbreeding.
‪#‎UCDavisResearch‬ provides new insight into the impact of population decline on these critically endangered apes, and provides clues as to how apes and humans adapt genetically to living in small populations: http://bit.ly/1CzXv7i

Today marks our 110th anniversary! In 1905, then-Governor Pardee’s signature paved the way for a UC farm school. UC Davis opened its doors as the "University Farm" to 40 students (all male) in what was then known as "Davisville." Today, we're home to a diverse body of students striving to make the world a better place for all. Thank you for continuing on this journey with us.less

Hobbes the three-legged terrier is getting a special treat from UC Davis graduate students: a fourth leg. With the aid of a 3D-printer, ‪UC Davis‬ grad students are determined to create a prototype of a 3D-printed limb. Hobbes' case is especially challenging: his leg was amputated high, allowing no stump to attach to. To circumvent this issue, the team created a harness design to wrap around Hobbes' chest. These students are taking extracurricular activities to a new level.‬
Three UC Davis students are working together to design a fourth limb for Hobbes, a three-legged terrier mix. They plan to print the limb on the Arcade library’s 3-D printer.

Children exposed to tobacco smoke from their parents while in the womb are predisposed to developing diabetes as adults. Women whose mothers smoked while pregnant were two to three times as likely to be diabetic as adults:

“We found that smoking of parents is by itself a risk factor for diabetes, independent of obesity or birth weight... If a parent smokes, you’re not protected from diabetes just because you’re lean,” said lead author Michele La Merrill, an assistant professor of environmental toxicology. ‪#‎UCDavisResearch‬
