At ‪#‎UC Davis, we're turning the oil industry from part of the problem to part of the solution. Amy Myers Jaffe is identifying incentives for businesses to make choices that are profitable AND best for the public good. Her research helps bring together policymakers and leaders in the technology, oil and gas sectors to explore business models that can achieve clean energy in a commercially sustainable way: http://bit.ly/1zLX3m5

UC Davis College of Engineering students had the rare opportunity to chat LIVE with crew members aboard the International Space Station. The "Inflight Education Downlink" led by Professor (and former astronaut) Steve Robinson, is in conjunction with NASA's Johnson Space Center to encourage school and college students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math. Something is very wrong with this newborn horse: it's detached and stumbling; the foal seems to not recognize its mother, and attempts to climb into the corner feeder. Here's a clue: the foal's symptoms harbor intriguing similarities to childhood autism in humans. For horses, that translates to neonatal maladjustment syndrome.

#UCDavis researchers hope their efforts will help prevent and treat the disorder in foals and advance the search for the causes of autism. Human and veterinary medicine — a reminder that although two-legged and four-legged patients are different, their health is delicately intertwined.#OneHealth #CaAg http://bit.ly/1CtVajz

I cannot wait to hear more about this research. The practical application of the rehabilitation of the foals could be (carefully) brought to therapists serving children and individuals with autism for individual consideration.

Here's a cringe worthy fact: 164 million TONS of waste are disposed in our landfills annually. For Professor Ruihong Zhang, this alarming data fueled her to find a way to reduce landfill waste, implement sustainable practices and convert waste to energy. Through her efforts at CleanWorld, she developed a process to convert organic waste at #UCDavis into renewable electricity and agricultural products: bit.ly/1AxaE2P

How can you tell when your good olive oil goes bad? A team of UC Davis students (pictured) built a bio-sensor that determines olive oil quality for the 2014 iGEM Competition, in which they were named the grand prize winner! The team also won the Best Policy and Practices Advanced Presentation Award.

Children exposed to tobacco smoke from their parents while in the womb are predisposed to developing diabetes as adults. Women whose mothers smoked while pregnant were two to three times as likely to be diabetic as adults:

“We found that smoking of parents is by itself a risk factor for diabetes, independent of obesity or birth weight... If a parent smokes, you’re not protected from diabetes just because you’re lean,” said lead author Michele La Merrill, an assistant professor of environmental toxicology. ‪#‎UCDavisResearch‬

This is the story of Molly the Cow. Molly had a great fall, tumbling into a 30-foot mine shaft; she was stuck in the shaft for three days. That's when UC Davis Veterinarians came to the rescue; using a specially designed lift, veterinarians helped the nine-year-old cow out of the shaft and into the loving arms of her owner, Antoinette Nichols. Molly is now a ‪#‎happycow‬, thanks to the efforts of ‪#‎UCDavis‬ veterinarians: http://cbsloc.al/1y9QOpW  #CaAg  #GoAgs!

There's no place like Domes... The New York Times toured the 1970s experiment in communal housing, "in which students live in igloolike fiberglass domes and snuggle up in snow-white interiors of plastic foam... amid fruit trees, scampering chickens and rows of spinach, they can marvel at a gazebo made from bicycle wheels, a metal Triassic flying reptile in a tree and a multicolored apiary that sums up the Domes’ philosophy: 'Just bee.'" This is how we dome: http://nyti.ms/1yH5GDf

+UC Davis promotes the Domes now that they got some attention from the New York Times, but just a few years ago +UC Davis tried to boot them off campus and tear down the housing.
