There is a reason I named a sound stage in Ruby Dee’s honor at my studio. When she christened it we were all on our feet and in tears. God, how I wish young people knew the price that these people have paid for us all to live the lives we have today.

Our elders are bidding us adieu, while at the same time saying "it's your turn now child." Lift someone. Help someone. Encourage someone. Celebrate someone. Let your life be an example and let your death speak volumes about who you were and what you have done to leave humanity better.

Rest Ms. Ruby Dee. 91 years of lifting us all deserves one last standing ovation! We’re on our feet for you. God bless. We know your eyes are watching God.

CALLING US HIGHER

At Dr. Maya Angelou’s memorial service, First Lady Michelle Obama’s speech blew my mind. Oprah’s words were phenomenal. Ms. Tyson's reflections were heartwarming. Lee Ann Womack sang my favorite song, “I Hope You Dance”. Valerie Simpson made me want to shout for joy. But it was something that former President Bill Clinton said that shook something in me. He was talking about her life and all that she had done. All of her books, poems and accolades. She worked with civil rights giants including Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. He went on and on and then he said, “On her 40th birthday Dr. King was assassinated.” I thought, to myself, “Dear God, she had done all of that by 40.”

I'm 44, I'm behind… LOL. I got so inspired. Her life was such an example to all that you can achieve, whatever you'd like, no matter where you came from. Sitting in that chapel I could hear her voice on my phone as it had been many times. The conversation would always start with "Hello you brilliant man". She made me light up and feel like I could do anything. That was her gift to us all. And above the beauty of the celebration of her life yesterday, more than anything in that room, what I felt most was her life calling us all higher.

God, thank you for allowing us to have shared this planet with Dr. Maya Angelou.

There have only been a handful of people in my life who have moved me, inspired me, encouraged me, and helped mold the man I am today. One of those people would be Dr. Maya Angelou. She was a woman I called "friend".

Her words and her spirit are too powerful to leave this earth with her passing. Her legacy and poems will take wings, forever landing at the foundation of anything that betters humanity. Dr. Maya Angelou will live on in all of us who called her a phenomenal woman, phenomenally.

She is loved and will be missed.

The Haves And The Have Nots is BACK this Tuesday. Are you ready? #HAHN

WARNING!! BE CAREFUL HOW YOU TREAT YOUR CHILDREN!

In my prayer and quiet time at 5am, I was praying about how to (one day) be the best father that I can be. I have no doubt that I will be a great dad, but as I looked back in my life for an example, all I could remember were all of the horrible things that were said and done to me as a kid. But before I could get sad about it, I remembered something I wrote a while back about "learning in reverse".

If you are like me and had no good examples, then your lesson is in reverse. I learned many years ago that if I do the opposite of what was done and said to me then I have learned how to be a good father some day. Which lead my mind to a line in one of my favorite songs of all time. It's called “Mary Did You Know”. I've written about this before, but I think it's worth sharing again.

The song is about Mary, the mother of Jesus, and in the song the lyrics ask the question, “Mary, did you know that the child that you delivered will soon deliver you?” Such a powerful question. I want to ask parents this question today. Do you know how special your child is? Do you know who God has put into your house? I know sometimes you think it's just your child but I'm sure many parents of children who went on to change this world had no idea who was sleeping down the hall from them. Be careful, because the child that you delivered may one day have to deliver you. Meaning, the very child that you gave birth to and you took care of in your youth may be the child that has to take care of you as you age. If my mother was alive she would testify, I'm sure.

My prayer for us today:

I pray this morning, oh God, for every parent of children born and yet to be born to have a clearer understanding of the blessing that their child is. I also pray for the safe return of the Nigerian girls. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Have a beautiful day.

Magic Johnson, such a class act. Anderson Cooper, thanks for a great interview.

To all my friends in Canada, The Haves and the Have Nots premieres tomorrow night at 9 ET on OWN Canada: Oprah Winfrey Network.
