As a follow-up to the post on 1/13/17, the Chicago area meetings have been scheduled.

The Town Hall meetings will cover the realities of public pensions in Illinois. TRS Executive Director Dick Ingram will take questions and provide facts that can help teachers and the general public understand the issues surrounding pensions in Illinois.

TRS Executive Director Dick Ingram will hold a series of Town Hall meetings in January and February across the state of Illinois. The meetings will cover the realities of public pensions in Illinois. Director Ingram will take questions and provide facts that can help teachers and the general public understand the issues surrounding pensions in Illinois. No reservations are needed. There will be a total of seven Town Hall meetings across the state – in Marion, Collinsville, Chicago, Springfield and Moline. There will be three meetings in the Chicago area and info will be made available as soon as plans are finalized.

The 2016 TRS Benefits Reports for all active and inactive members are now available in the secure Member Account Access area: https://trs.illinois.gov/subsections/secureaccountaccess/security/signin.aspx

The report summarizes the following information about a member's TRS account: refundable contributions, beneficiary refund, beneficiaries, sick leave service, 2.2 upgrade information, reciprocal service, refunded service that may be reinstated, optional service, and active service as of June 30, 2016.

Check your beneficiaries on the report and review all the information for accuracy. Contact your employer about any service record or salary errors. Those are reported to TRS by your employer.

Reports are only sent to members who are not yet collecting a benefit. Annuitants do not receive TRS Benefits Reports.

The election of two teacher trustees and one annuitant trustee to the TRS Board is set by law for Friday, May 1, 2017. To be nominated and placed on the ballot, prospective candidates must collect and deliver to TRS a minimum of 500 eligible signatures as defined by state law. We surpassed our fiscal year 2016 goals for integrating women and minority-owned money managers and brokers into our investment program with more than 17.6 percent of the total portfolio managed by WMBE companies. “We find that a diverse roster of asset managers and brokers constantly infuse TRS with new ideas to enhance the portfolio and identify potential investment opportunities that are a benefit to our 400,000 members,” Executive Director Dick Ingram said. To improve transparency in the reporting of investment fees paid by TRS, the System will begin using a new nationwide reporting template with new private equity managers. TRS is a member of the ILPA.

In August, TRS trustees reduced the System’s long-range assumed rate of investment return to 7 percent from 7.5 percent, a move that reflects changes in the world economy that have dampened investment results. Please read Director Dick Ingram’s comments on the rate change:
