Toyota of Portsmouth was my first stop in car shopping. I tested a 2014 Corolla and loved it, including the color. Frank Acceta was friendly and helpful, without being (too) pushy. After testing out 3 other cars the same day, I emailed Frank and the dealer to see if they could reduce the price to compete with another offer at a different dealership. Not only did no one respond to my email, but when I used the "chat" feature on the website, the chat agent quoted me a price $1,000 higher than Frank's "special" price. I explained I'd been offered a lower price and then she said "oh yes, I see that. Well, we can't match IRA Manchester's price." I said "okay, I'll be taking my business there. If anything changes let me know." The agent said "Sorry about that. Thanks for the opportunity." I never heard back from Frank or anyone there, which I found vexing and strange considering (I thought) dealers are competitive and want to...sell cars? I was ready to purchase, and lo and behold, found the same vehicle with only 2,000 more miles at Ira Manchester and drove away with it the very next day after I visited Toyota of Portsmouth. Their unwillingness to budge on price lost them a customer--oh well! (By the way, I gave Ira Toyota of Manchester a 5-star rating--go there instead, even if you live on the Seacoast. You can't beat their prices and transparency.)

I bought my first ever "New Car" from them back in 2010. The atmosphere was super pleasant, everyone was nice and extremely helpful. I got, what I felt, was a fair deal on the new car. They paid off my old car (which I was upside-down on), gave me a service and warranty upgrade for free, and had me out the door within a 2 hours with my new car. Summer of 2014 I was ready to trade in my ride for something new. I brought it here first, as I had a pleasant experience in the past. First thing I noticed was the lack of staff compared to my first visit, and they didnt seem as friendly. I was given a great trade in offer for my car, but they would not budge an inch from the sticker price of the new car (which was a lot higher than the cars actual value). Thats a great tactic I guess, offer me a nice trade offer, and then sell me a car at sticker price. Needless to say, I walked. I decided to give them another try very recently, with the same car as a trade in. Again, short staffed, and not very friendly. I had seen an enticing lease deal on their website for X amount down and X amount a month. When I showed them what I wanted, ofcourse they told me they didnt have that car in stock, and tried to push a more expensive one on me. They also low-balled me on my trade in, dropping several thousand dollars from their offer no more than 3 or 4 months ago. Again, no willingness to budge on sticker price for anything. Then they tell me they can order the truck I saw, but then raised the down payment and monthly payment on me. Nice bait and switch move. That was enough for me. I had to pleasant time on my first visit, however, these last 2 visits are enough to make me take my business elsewhere.

First, I want to say that 1 star is too much! After purchasing 1 car from this dealership, 2006 Toyota Rav 4 several years back, the salesman was good, however, the sales manager was abrasive and rude! I should have learned my lesson the first time...Fast forward several years, I decided to give them a second chance as I have not seen that sales manager there 3-6 months after I purchased the car. I decided I wanted to test drive a Toyota Venza, however, during the process of trying to test drive several of them, several issues came about (ex. dead battery, tires were unbalanced - a vibration was felt while driving the car and no fuel in the gas tank - we had to stop and get fuel before test driving). When the issues were pointed out to the salesman, the salesman stated "to ignore the problems as they could be fixed and asked how the car was otherwise." After test driving the Venza, the salesman then pushed me to drive the newly designed Rav 4 and Camry. After test driving multiple vehicles, we realized it was a weekend sales event and this started pressure from the salesman. There was an orange tag hanging from all of the cars in the lot for $2,000 - $3,000 off. The negotiation started with the price on the car, the number was substantially larger than what the orange tag price was in the window. When questioned about this, the salesman stated that it was a "cash only" price. When pushed further, I asked to see the orange tag to see where it says "cash only price" and no where on that tag did it say "cash only". The only thing the salesman could say is that " this is a really good price for this car they were offering" as where I said "this is completely inappropriate - people come in here and see the orange tag price and come to find out the negotiating price is substantially higher". The salesman then babbled on to say that people pay for cars with cash all of the time to where I then said "that is untrue and this is what you would call a bait and switch as people come in thinking this is going to be this price and you go to negotiate and it comes out to be a different price". The salesman then responded "do you want to talk with the sales manager?" I responded "No this is not going anywhere and not worth it". The salesman got up and left to go get the sales manager as were about to leave. The sales manager came over as we stated this was a "bait and switch" and the sales manager replied "you wouldn't know a bait and switch is if it hit you in the face". Needless to say, we walked out with requesting his bosses information or to speak with his boss. He refused to answer who his boss was and then said "I am the boss, I have no boss" and then threatened to call the police and have me kicked out and to not come back. A week later the salesman call my house to see whether I was still interested in the car...I traveled an hour north to Berlin City Toyota in Portland, ME, where I got a year newer model for less money and much better service! I will no longer be servicing my car(s) at Portsmouth Toyota nor buying anymore vehicles from them!!!
