Anti-Piracy Company Explores New Ways to Convert Pirates - This week anti-piracy outfit MUSO announced the launch of a new component to its portfolio of content protection solutions. Titled ‘Retune’ the package aims to enable rights holders to directly market and sell their content to piracy-engaged audiences. In a world dominated by companies specializing in simply taking down content, shutting down sites and even suing end users, the possibility of a more creative approach to piracy issue...

PayPal Starts Banning VPN and SmartDNS Services - PayPal is widely known for their aggressive stance towards BitTorrent sites, Usenet providers and file-hosting services, but VPN, proxy and SmartDNS providers might now suffer the same fate too. This week PayPal stopped accepting payments for a company that provides VPN and SmartDNS tools, stating that these may facilitate copyright infringement. So-called “unblocker” tools can be used to bypass geo-filtering blockades which Netflix and othe...
After cutting off file-hosting sites and Usenet providers, PayPal is now taking aim at VPN and SmartDNS services. The payment processor states that services which can be used to bypass measures to prevent copyright infringement, such as geo-blockades, are violating its terms of service.

Google Targets Fake ‘Download’ and ‘Play’ Buttons - The aim on most file-sharing and streaming sites is for users to either download or play content, whether that’s the former to their hard drive or the latter in a YouTube-style window. It should be straightforward but all too often users are presented with an array of buttons, all of which claim to either ‘download’ or ‘play’ when in reality only one actually does anything useful. In conjunction with suspect advertisers, it appears that so...
Google says it will go to war against the fake 'download' and 'play' buttons that attempt to deceive users on file-sharing and other popular sites. An extension of its 'Safe Browsing' initiative launched eight years ago and tweaked last November, the moves will see users increasingly warned when Google and Chrome users are faced with deceptive practices.

Fansubbers Take Anti-Piracy Group BREIN to Court - Fan-made subtitles are commonly created for two purposes – to let foreigners understand English-speaking entertainment or to provide the deaf with a way to comprehend audio. Every day millions of people enjoy homemade subtitles but if it was up to some copyright holder groups, the websites offering these files would all cease to exist. This has created a fair amount of tension between both sides and several subtitle websites have had to clo...

Torrent Tracker Knocked Offline by ‘Faulty’ Takedown Requests
An Indian film production company is overloading hosting companies with takedown notices, asking the providers to take down some of the largest torrent trackers in the world. While the notices are not the most accurate, they have already led to a temporary disconnection of a large public tracker.

Pirate Group Suspends New Cracks to Measure Impact on Sales - One of the hottest topics in the game piracy scene in late 2015 surrounded the Avalanche Studios/Square Enix title Just Cause 3. Released on December 1, 2015, pirates were eager to get their hands on the game for free. However, JC3 is protected by the latest iteration of Denuvo, an anti-tamper technology developed by Denuvo Software Solutions GmbH. Denuvo is not DRM per se, but acts as a secondary encryption system protecting und...
The China-based cracking group that recently bemoaned Denuvo's anti-piracy system as all but unbreakable has delivered a second surprise announcement. 3DM says it will stop working on single-player games cracks for at least a year so it can assess whether genuine sales will be affected.

MPAA Takes Over Popcorn Time Domain - Late last year the main Popcorn Time fork, operating from the PopcornTime.io domain name, shut down its website unexpectedly. The MPAA took credit for the fall announcing that it had filed a lawsuit against several of the developers in Canada. In response to these legal threats several key developers backed out. Since the initial announcement there haven’t been any official updates on the case. TorrentFreak learned, however, that several of the accused ...
The MPAA is now the owner of Popcorntime.io, the domain name which was the home of the most used Popcorn Time fork up until last November. The change of ownership suggests that the Hollywood group reached a settlement with one of the key developers, but has yet to comment on the recent developments.

Torrents-Time Brings Popcorn Time to Any Windows Browser - There can be little doubt that in recent months the Popcorn Time phenomenon has been turned on its head, with legal action by the MPAA just one of the concept’s problems. Since the breakup of the PopcornTime.io team there has been much jockeying behind the scenes, with various groups trying to variously revitalize and take control of new forks and development. Very little of this activity has led to innovation. However, while all of...
Software making its debut this week is helping to breathe new life into the Popcorn Time concept. Torrents-Time is a plug-in that in conjunction with a new breed of websites will enable users to run the infamous movie and TV show application in any modern Windows browser. The most popular Popcorn Time fork has launched a site utilizing the technology.

Homeless People Lose Internet Access Over Illegal Downloads - More than 15 years ago a large group of homeless people in Portland moved into an area on the outskirts of the city and erected their tents. Amid both opposition and support, Dignity Village was born. Over the years the tents were displaced by small hand-built structures that provided basic shelter for the village’s residents who were all desperate to stay off the streets. In time these largely wooden shelters and the formation o...
