I was walking through the parks in Dublin the other day, and it was nice and quiet, and the thick covering of leaves on the trees was almost hypnotic, so I started filming some of the leaves dancing, for fun.  I put together this abstract little video of the dance of leaves as they gently blow in the wind.

There was a nice little surprise for Sony A6000 owners yesterday when Sony announced a new firmware for the camera. Version 2 added one big new feature, and that is the XAVC-S codec. Up till now, if you were recording video on the A6000 you were stuck with the rather awful AVC-HD codec and a low bit rate, and frankly the quality wasn't the best. You could record uncompressed HD from the HDMI port on the camera, and having tried that in the past, the difference is remarkable. But adding an external recorder defeats the purpose of having a small camera. With the new firmware, Sony is adding a much better codec and the results are pretty great.

I recently took some time off to have a well deserved holiday in the beautiful seaside city of Nice in the south of France. Normally when I travel I take an assortment of cameras, with the main one usually being my D700 with 28-300 lens. However, as the primary purpose of this trip was to relax and unwind, I wanted to travel light and, to be honest, I had considered not taking any cameras and just enjoying the sunshine. Of course, the photographer inside me wouldn't let that happen! I decided to bring my X-E1 and an old Film camera, but I ended up taking most of my pictures with my iPhone.

I've been a bit quiet, photographically speaking, over the last week or two. I've been busy working on some design jobs, so I haven't updated the site here as much as I would like. Anyway, as it's a beautiful spring day here in Dublin, here are some daffodil shots to celebrate the changing of the seasons.

Trying out my Nikon 24-120 f/4 lens on the Sony A6000 and got really nice results. I wrote all about it here: http://blog.thomasfitzgeraldphotography.com/blog/2015/6/summer-flowers-sony-a6000-with-nikon-24-120

Good to see Adobe working on this....
One of the interesting tidbits, buried in the list of bug fixes for the Lightroom CC update that was released yesterday was a mention of improvements to Fuji X-Trans processing in Lightroom. Any long term follower of this blog, knows that Lightroom’s poor quality X-Trans  rendering has long been a bug bear of mine, and I’ve sought ways to minimise it and ways to avoid it altogether. In the announcement yesterday, Adobe has dealt with t...

Can't wait till this gets released!
I'm a big fan of Sony Products, and anyone who follows this blog knows that I've a soft spot for their cameras. I currently have an A6000 and I've previously shot with a Nex 7. I've also been eagerly following the developments of the A7 line with great interest. I've said it before, but Sony are one of the few companies really innovating in the imaging space. Not only are their sensors used by pretty much every other major company now...

I posted some of my images from the recent trip that I took to Nice, in the south of France last week. As I wrote, most of the time I just used my iPhone to take photos, mainly because we were there to relax and take it easy. I did have my little fuji with me too though, and I did get to take some shots with that too.

I've been using the new version of Lightroom pretty extensively over the last day or so since it came out, and I have a few observations to share. This isn't a comprehensive review by any means, but rather some initial findings based on using it in real-world conditions.

I’ve been using Capture One to process my X-Trans files more and more lately. I had posted some initial findings before about this, and since then, Capture One has pretty much become my standard application for processing files from my X-E1. I’m really happy with how the software performs, and it does a really good job with Fuji’s files. Not only does it produce nice and sharp artifact free images, but the colour is really great too, even without having to do anything.
