In the first part of this series in which I shared some pictures from my film archives of Dublin City, I looked at some of the areas of the city that has changed significantly since the late nineties. I looked at Connoly station, O’Connell Street, and the Liffey as well as the Powerscourt Centre just off Grafton Street. At the time I was taking quite a few pictures of people too. Without really realising it I had already began shooting ...

One of the things that sometimes occurs with images taken on a digital camera is that the overall image may be ok, but there may be excessive noise in the shadows. With that in mind, there may be times where you don’t want to apply too much nose reduction to your whole image, in order to retain detail in the highlights for example, but you do want to reduce the noise in the shadow areas. While there is no real way to limit the noise reduction to the shadows in Lightroom alone (apart from manually painting it on) it’s actually pretty easy if you use Photoshop.

Lightroom’s noise reduction tools are pretty good, and can help reduce digital noise in an image quite effectively. However, one of the things that sometimes occurs with images taken on a digital camera is that the overall image may be ok, but there may be excessive noise in the shadows. This is because most digital cameras are noisier in the shadow part of the image than they are in the brighter parts. While this is decreasing with m...

It’s been a weird few weeks. I’ve been dealing with some health issues since June, and it’s been taking its toll on me, both from a photographic point of view as well as a physical and emotional one...The upshot of this is that I haven’t been able to get out as much as I would like to because of a lack of energy and generally feeling rotten. But the outside has been calling me, as has my camera....Over the weekend my wife and I took a w...

I was a big fan of Mythbusters when it was on, and I'm a big fan of Adam Savage. I regularly watch/listen to his podcast on Tested.com: “Still Untitled: The Adam Savage Project. I love Adam's insight into the creative process and as someone who has worked in the creative arts for many years, I know where he's coming from a lot of the time. He often puts words on experiences or feelings that I've had working as a creative in ways that I ...

I’ve long complained about the lack of certain metadata functionality in Lightroom. I don’t particularly like the interface for entering metadata as it is, but the software lacks certain key features that I have long missed since moving from Aperture. While many of these are probably not tools the average person will ever use, for some power users they are very important, and will often lead to the use of external software such as Photo Mechanic. Specifically I’m taking about things like replacing metadata and appending metadata. Recently I set about trying to find a solution, and it came in the form of a plug-in from John Beardsworth called “Search Replace Transfer”
