Urgh... 1:20am. Sleepless last night, freshly laundered clothes still wet in the morning and beyond being ironed dry (I tried). Walk to train with sleet coming down, remember that I forgot to apply nicotine patch, arrive at Waterloo Station to hook up with co-writer Stacey...at more or less the exact moment I receive an e-mail suggesting we have arrived 4 hours early (it is possible there may have been muttered words upon receiving this news as we stood in the quite bitter cold)... Make our way to Greenwich Theatre nevertheless just as snow starts falling and the threatened blizzard seems on its way, remember again that I forgot to apply nicotine patch, proceed to kill 4 hours which pass surprisingly pleasantly playing sandwich roulette and managing to secure a gig for our son Mack (his London début and only his third public performance!). In due course, the snow having passed and darkness closing in, sit in front row of cold theatre with director Sheryl, theatre manager Henry and the kind lady and gentleman stand-ins, and welcome the auditioners (auditionees..?)...and experience that thing writers are occasionally blessed with: watching their words come alive. Some efforts disappoint. One even offends. But some - not even a handful, but enough - went places I had never imagined, and made me laugh, applaud and chatter with excitement, impatient to see a full performance. By the end, we had our cast. On the way back home? Pitch black, much colder and completely exhausted, but we caught each of our three trains with such exactitude it would have been a good day to buy a lottery ticket, or perhaps our luck had already expressed itself. Yes, tomorrow means a return to chasing a buck, but tonight..? Arrive home. Apply nicotine patch. Fall asleep on couch. Wake for no good reason at 1:20am. Sit at computer and type "Urgh..."...and think of all our friends who were a part of this play when it debuted in New York 18 years ago, and our friends who today are kind enough to support us on this new adventure. And who are they, these friends? You are one, for reading this. Thank you for going above and beyond. And if there is a tear in my eye (fuck, I hadn't expected that; perhaps it is exhaustion...), I ask you to excuse me.
