LAST PLACES REMAINING - The Bigger Picture is designed by Bob and Roberta Smith and will be taught by Bob and Roberta Smith and Johanna Melvin.
The course is concerned with thinking about painting in a radically new way and will look at painting as an act undertaken by the artist that has consequences. We will look both at the process of painting, surface, colour, form, composition and the subject of painting, the personal and political. The year will culminate with an exhibition in the Art Pavilion Mile End Park in June 2018

London Drawing and The Essential School of Painting collaborate to produce this exciting two-day course on experimental drawing. This summer course will be dynamic, hands-on and use the human figure as a visual prompt that enables participants (that’s you) to unlock their own creativity and learn to think like an artist. We will focus on technique and materials in a practical, energising environment. We will combine a wide range of experimental approaches… some traditional and others designed to break with those traditions.

Bob and Roberta Smith OBE RA introduces our end of year postgraduate exhibition The Image Obsession Question. The students of The Bigger Picture course 2016-17 showcase their work following an intense year where, on a weekly basis, they made and present their personal work. Following the presentation they discussed their work and received feedback/critique with the aim of answering the fundamental question, who am I as an artist? Painting Techniques Part 3: A Practical Guide through Time 20th to 21st Century Art

This is a material based course with respect and in response to the multiple developments in painting and the art movements of the 20th and 21st Century.
Anthony Daley will deliver a ten week course on Mondays. The course is one of practical and sustained painting and drawing with an emphasis on materials, concepts and passions of twentieth century as found in post-war American paintings. The course will employ a technique of multi-layered teaching. That is, teaching each individual student independently according to their own needs and level whilst maintaining a group cohesion and purpose. This allows the course to be suitable for all comers, from beginner to advanced. This course aims to be a labyrinthine journey with and through drawing and painting, but it will be a labyrinth of our own making where the only peril will be discovery itself. | Please note The 1st of May is a Bank Holiday and half term is on 29 May 2017 | ALL LEVELS OF EXPERIENCE ARE WELCOME

Weaving the Thread - Painting and the Imagination with Adrian Wiszniewski |Fri-Sun 9 - 11 June 2017 | Fee£240

This three day course will be dedicated to the development of visual ideas, through some guided exercises, searching for individual responses in drawing and painting which will arise through your investigations.

Over the three days Adrian will give demonstrations on how he approaches his work, lead the class in several approaches designed to stimulate ideas and your imagination and give group and one to one feedback. He will also talk about his latest work across various media from Painting to the making of art documentaries.
There will be a group crit at the end of the workshop with glass of wine to help the wisdom flow.

Suitable for all levels of experience except complete beginners.

Painting in Egg Tempera with Doug Safranek: 25 – 29 March 2017 (Saturday to Wednesday)

This is a rare opportunity to learn from a master egg tempera artist. Doug Safranek is an internationally renowned artist who paints thought provoking portraits of New Yorkers and emotive scenes of the vibrant city. Doug, a thirty year master in egg tempera painting, teaches a five day course at the Essential School of Painting on how to produce contemporary paintings using this medium associated with renaissance art. This cass limited to 12 participants. All are welcome
This class includes a tour of the Sainsbury wing of the National Gallery with Doug looking and discussing tempera art through the ages.

Students will discover that egg tempera is quite economical, versatile, environment-friendly, and well-suited for contemporary use. They will learn how to prepare a panel with rabbit skin glue-based gesso, how to transfer drawings to the panel, and how to layer tempera paint using both traditional and contemporary techniques. All levels of experience are welcome.
