Fakes don’t kill brands; they kill businesses

Fakes don’t come from another planet. Mobile phones, toothpastes, consumer durables, soft drinks, Cigarette or clothing– fakes are found all around the originals in the shops or malls. How does one separate the two sides of the same coin? Like it or not– sooner or later– counterfeit, spurious, duplicate, copied or fakes are going to leave their impact — poison our lives.

Pak-sponsored Jihadi terrorism is likely to spread beyond Kashmir in other parts of India after the US forces pull out of Afghanistan.

Pakistan wants to market Jihadi-terrorism to destabilise J&K and make India bleed. The local militants in Kashmir have so far spurned Pakistan’s overtures. As a result, militancy has reached the lowest ebb in Kashmir. Pakistani agents are finding it extremely difficult to enlist enough new recruits for subversive activities. It is just the situation India needs to capitalise and build on. It cannot remain a mute spectator.

Are we waiting for yet another intrusion to wake up on coastal security?

Less than two months ago al-Qaida unsuccessfully tried to hijack two Pakistani frigates PNS Aslat and PNS Zulfikar. Ostensibly its aim was to use them against Indian ships. All this should have been enough reason for the Indian government agencies responsible for coastal security to be on their toes. They aren’t.

Why do people in India fear the police?

People in India fear the police as much as the criminals. According to Transparency International, corruption in the police (Crime/Traffic) in India is estimated to be to the tune of Rs 3899 crore per annum. All these are symptoms of not just distrust in the police but a complete and total breakdown of values and crisis of confidence in the criminal justice system.

Schools: playgrounds or battlegrounds?

School children and teachers live under the shadow of the gun all over the world. Does it make any difference if the hand on the trigger is that of a terrorist or security forces personnel? Many students, teachers, schools, and universities have seen targeted attacks, bombing, burning, killing, kidnapping and torture in the last 5-10 years. Many people died, and many others missed out on education.

Rebuilding Afghanistan: Agenda for 2015

After more than a decade of intense fighting, the US and NATO forces are in the fag-end of leaving war torn Afghanistan. A prime concern in everyone’s minds is whether the proud Afghans would be able to rebuild an efficient and people friendly system of governance or Afghanistan would once again go back to being safe havens for the Taliban and al-Qaeda to launch terror attacks? A durable peace and stability is the only hope for Afghanistan precariously perched on the edge of violence and tranquility.
