fans of the teletubbies might want to look away. reducing the palette to b&w renders the quartet terrorizing.

anna atkins and her 'photograms' are the subject of today's google doodle, and rightly so. she published the first photo book with images of algae captured in cyanotype. (thnx for the pointer to the always-fab +Allison Gerlach.)

artist nils-udo creates unique outdoor assemblages from whatever he finds lying around. what a beautiful eye he has. inspiring as spring tries to edge its way in.
German artist Nils-Udo creates site-specific arrangements using materials around. They are striking and beautiful and provocative.

i keep tweaking my work environment to better inspire/facilitate, but i'm a mere novice compared to these 100 artists photographed in situ. unsurprisingly, neatniks are decidedly in the minority.
A good studio for an artist is the most important place. For us the creative studio sometimes might look like a pile of rubbish or a room where everything is mixed up , but this is where the great creations were born! Take a look at a collection of the greatest artists and their most intimate working places – their studios. I bet that you saw lots of their works in the museums and art history books, but often the artist himself is left unseen...

i want to live inside ellie davies head. or one of the uk forest scenes she so imaginatively enhances. sublime, really.
Ellie Davies, a talented multimedia artist in the UK, has spent seven years turning landscapes throughout the UK into beautiful and ghostly works of art. By introducing subtle (or sometimes not-so-subtle) elements to these landscapes, she turns them into meditations on our relationships with the landscapes we grow up and live in.

vindicated! i've never been a breakfast person. all i want upon waking is a big cup of coffee. i like bacon and eggs and french toast and the rest, but later in the day. science backs me up.
Hopes&Fears answers questions, with the help of people who know what they're talking about. Today, we wonder if what we've always been told about breakfast is actually true.

If you believe that a good carpet (or three) go a long way toward making life worth living, then I highly recommend checking out Chris Wahlgren's Nomad Rugs in San Francisco's Noe Valley. I bought my first tribal carpet from Chris years ago when he was still selling on the street. I've purchased several since and each time the experience has been deeply satisfying. The quality and prices are unbeatable. Visiting the shop in person is wondrous. If you're not local, check out what's available on the website. Free shipping! You really can't go wrong. (just for the record, i almost never promote something like this.)
