Episode 182 is part 2 of our conversation with Charles Poliquin. This part ended up being somewhat more about business. Being broke, figuring out how to make money, growing a business, and even the value of philanthropy – which is something that Charles feels has been very important in his success. The title “Hell Yes, or No” comes from another one of those “aha” moments while listening to Charles. This one was about making business decisions, but it could really apply to any decision.

Charles has a special offer for PowerCast viewers and listeners. Head over to https://strengthsensei.com/supertraining/ for a deal on a muscle building program that he’s put together. Maybe the best part is that you get access to ask questions of the man himself through a private Facebook group. There’s even a 30-day money-back guarantee. Who couldn’t use more muscle? (This is NOT a sponsored message.)

You can find Charles at strengthsensei.com and @strengthsensei1 on Instagram.

Welcome to 2017!

Stan Efferding returns to the show for our first episode of the new year. We talk about how your success in business is shaped by how you get started, and about how very small changes in your diet and workout plans yield the biggest results. Attention to detail is important, but how do you decide which details to focus on? Stan shares his well-reasoned point of view.

Jeff Novitsky, UFC’s vice president of athlete health and performance, is our guest for episode 178. He provides the connection between the UFC and the United States Anti-doping Agency or (USADA), the entity that’s contracted to oversee testing for performance enhancing drugs for the UFC. Many of you will know that in his previous job as a federal agent, Jeff was at the center of the investigations of Barry Bonds, Balco, Lance Armstrong, etc. In some circles, he was known as the Steroid Cop.

It was very interesting to hear that those investigations were not originally centered on athletes but on suppliers, and how his current job is really more about helping and supporting UFC athletes than anything else. He takes us inside Bones Jones latest suspension, and talks about some of the other athlete health initiatives UFC is involved in, like concussion testing and the effects of extreme weight cuts.
Next week, we’ve got a fun show that was recorded back in October with Brooke Erickson and Leanna Carr…and in the first week of January, the return of Stan Rhino Efferding.

We recorded this show with Cody “No Love” Garbrandt right after it was announced that he’d be headlining UFC 207 with Dominic Cruz for the World Bantam Weight title in Las Vegas on December 30th. Cody fights out of Team Alpha Male here in Sacramento. This was a great interview. Maybe one of the best of 2016. Cody takes us on his journey from growing up as he says “in the struggle” to this title fight in the octagon.

Check out how his hands move as he’s explaining his approaches to other fighters. So fluid…and this video is probably the slowest you’re ever going to see the move. Next week on this show, we finally have Urijah Faber. A guest we’ve been hoping to book from the very beginning. His last UFC fight ever is Dec 17, here in Sac.

Episode 174 features Larry “Wheels” Williams and his coach, John Gaglione. We recorded this a couple weeks ago when Larry was fresh off a stunning 2,171 lbs total in the 242 lbs weight class. Squatting 771 walked out in sleeves, benching 573, and pulling an incredible 826 lbs! If you’re already feeling inadequate hearing this, you’ll love when I tell you he’s only 21 years old.

Is he natty? Nah...

If you’re a long-time listener of this program, you may remember that we talked about John Gaglione in episodes one and three…posing as Mark Bell and Jesse Burdick’s attorney at a dinner with Reebok execs. I guess we’ve now come full circle. John owns Gaglione Strength in Farmingdale, NY.

Listen and find out why Blaine Sumner, owner of a 1,102 lbs single ply squat, thinks HE’S also the right owner of the nickname “Vanilla Gorilla” – being that he’s now the SECOND Vanilla Gorilla we’ve had on the show. We talk about giving up on football, raw versus single ply lifting, why he trains alone, and what self-spotting devices should really look like when you’re lifting massive weights. (No, he’s not selling equipment.)

You can find Blaine at https://www.blainesumner.com/ and thevanillagorilla92 on Instagram.

Our guest for episode 181, and later in the week 182 is Charles Poliquin.

Right off the bat Mark calls Charles the most successful trainer of all time, and as far as I know, that’s correct. He’s trained Olympic athletes, influenced millions through his books and articles, and trained a LOT of trainers and other individuals. He also remains one of the most popular guests ever on Tim Ferriss’ podcast. Some of you may not be as aware of Charles as you are of a guy like last week’s guest, Stan Efferding. The recording session for this episode ran about the same length as last week’s with Stan, so I decided to break this one up into a Wednesday/Friday split.

This first episode is called the Myth of Discipline for an “aha” moment that came while listening to him. “When you love something, you never have a problem with discipline.” (Also, check out his article of the same name: http://www.strengthsensei.com/the-myth-of-discipline/)

We’ll see you back here on Friday for more with Charles Poliquin. In the meantime, check out his website: http://www.strengthsensei.com and follow him at @strengthsensei

Brooke Erickson and Leanna Carr joined us for episode 179 back in October as part of the “Ladies of Bodybuilding.com” tour. Brooke is an IFBB Pro Figure competitor, and Leanna is a figure competitor and a competitive powerlifter. Brooke gave us a look at what it took to get her pro card and how she had to balance family demands and training requirements to make it happen. She also offered insight on how recovering from an eating disorder has shaped her approach to her family’s nutrition. Leanna described how she’s pursing both aesthetic and strength goals.

We also touch on the role of social media in fitness, and the extent to which kids should be exposed to it.

Next week, Stan Efferding!

Urijah Faber is our guest for episode 177. We’ve been trying to get him on the show since the beginning, and now we have him right before he takes his last trip to the octagon this Saturday night at UFC Fight Night here in Sacramento. As luck would have it, we had some last minute technical trouble, and I had to use a backup system to record this interview so it’s going to sound a little bit different. Sometimes you just have to punt.

Faber’s 33-10 professional MMA record in the WEC and UFC is impressive, but he has an even better record as a businessman and entrepreneur. It was awesome to finally have the California Kid on the show.

Our guest for episode 175 is, among many other things, a bodybuilding.com spokesmodel. Ashley Horner in some ways proves that you really can have it all…IF you’re willing to work for it. She’s a mother to three little boys. She’s been a pro fitness competitor. She’s an entrepreneur with her own apparel and supplement lines. She’s an ultra-runner and triathlete who recently rand 280 miles and rowed 300 miles to raise money for charity.

She has her own training facility and her own kids’ exercise website.

She started a charitable foundation that, among other things, supports the spouses and children of deployed military members, as well as women and children escaping violent homes.

And has a café that sells coffee and whiskey. Hard to top all that. She gives us insight on how she manages to make it all happen.

You can find her at ashleyhorner.co and @ashley.horner on Instagram.

IDK what "rand" is but 280 miles of it can't be easy. 😂

We met Karina’s fiancé Gabe Crisp of the band Whitechapel briefly back in episode167.

Our guest for Episode 170 is Meg Gallagher, but you know her better as MegSquats. We talk about her time as a bikini competitor, her WWE tryout, her love for USAPL powerlifting, how she built up multiple revenue streams both inside and outside the fitness industry so she could quite her pseudo secret day job, how her dad was a famous stripper, and pelvic floor training and period panties.
