The Happy Fishing Family
...and a make-believe story to go with the image (Long)
I shot this image last winter at Bakkhali, a seaside resort town in West Bengal, India. The shot is of some fisher-folk returning with a catch.
But all images give us more visual signals than just the bare facts. I thought it would be fun to turn detective and describe my reading of the image.
So here goes:
What is apparent to everyone is that this is the aftermath of a catch. The man carries the tools, and the women the vessels. Most Indians will also be able to tell that these people practice Hinduism, evidenced by the 'Bindi' (dot) and the type of bangles that the women wear.
So far we are on firm ground. What is written next is conjecture.
The group appears to be a fishing family. The old man, who leads, and his wife flank the outside. The two women carrying the load are daughters-in-law. Possibly, the woman at the back is the elder son's wife, but I can't be sure. In rural India families staying and working together are a common feature. So this family has at least 6 adults, but there may be unmarried sons who are working elsewhere.
The catch appears to be smaller than expected (witness empty vessels) but there is happiness all around. May well be a case of quality versus quantity - and that could mean tiger prawns.
The family is reasonably well to do in terms of the local economy, but are not wasteful. All the members wear fairly new, but inexpensive, slippers and the women only wear mandatory jewelry. It is likely that the younger menfolk are doing well, and this activity is all about the family lending a participatory hand.
The location is near a sea coast as evidenced by the signboard (Lat/Lon: 21°33'40.8"N 88°16'03.8"E; 21.561340, 88.267729), and the relaxing bull is the local shared service provider. These bulls are usually released as a part of a religious ceremony and range freely in the locality. Most families keep cows, but need not keep a bull because this bull is around. I had once met this one on an earlier trip, and he is one nasty customer :)
Hope you enjoyed that tale :D
