- a fish that over 300 million (30 crores) people swear by!
Tenualosa ilisha (Hilsa shad) is a species of fish in the herring family which is widespread in the Indian Ocean. Bengali speaking people worldwide are the biggest consumers of Hilsa, which can grow up to 60cm (2 feet) in length and weigh nearly 3 kg. The fish schools in coastal waters and ascends up the rivers for as much as 1,000 km during the South West monsoons. Most are caught for the trade at this time and the insatiable demand is leading to serious over-fishing. Prices are also on the rise and this 1.5 kg (3.3 pounds) specimen will sell for close to Rs 2,000 (USD 31) in the Kolkata market today.
For those who are unaware of the qualities of the Hilsa, a word of caution - it is a very bony fish and unless you are a well trained hilsa-eater it is safest to try boneless 'Smoked hilsa' :) #hilsa #tenualosa #ilisha #kolkata
