This is in reply to ytsejam6891, since his account settings do not allow direct replying to comments on this page.  The statistics for road icing-caused accidents are extensively documented here: http://icyroadsafety.com/fatalitystats.shtml  Average annual road ice fatalities are at least twice of those from the combined total annual fatalities from hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, lightning and strong winds.  This has been especially true in Texas, where a freezing rain event like the one shown in this video typically causes more injuries and deaths than most tornado and hurricane events in the state.

+Dan Robinson Yup, I believe you on that. There's a saying: "YOU CAN'T FIX STUPID". Most people don't go to an empty Wal-mart parking lot and try to do skidding maneuvers with their car, just to get a hang of what happens when one end or the other breaks loose. I do all the time in the winter, it's fun as long as I make sure there are no other cars anywhere around. I've learned how to correct a skid, to do a ton of stuff I wouldn't otherwise know how to do. If you wait until you start to skid on a real road to learn such things then it will be too late, you won't know how to correct a skid on ice or snow, and you're done for. Usually people steer into a skid, but when the car begins to correct back into a straight line they don't bring the steering back to straight ahead fast enough and they amplify the motion in a yo-yo effect until they are totally out of control. Seen it myself and was in awe at how they are their own worst enemies by not practicing ahead of time.

The deadliest icy road event in the past 6 years was the December 23-24, 2008 freezing rain event, which hit mainly the Midwestern US states. 49 people lost their lives in 2 days. Compare that with most single weather events of ANY type! Only the Joplin tornado and the April 27, 2011 tornado outbreak took more lives in a single event within 48 hours in that time period.

Is there such a type of lightning called Bar Lightning or am I remembering some old fantasy novel?

In less than a week, we've seen 28 fatalities on icy roads during this winter weather outbreak. Accidents on icy roads kill and injure more than twice the number of people than all other severe weather hazards combined (tornadoes, floods, hurricanes, lightning). The interior parts of the US have the highest accident rates. Even in the "Tornado Alley" states, many more people die on icy roads per year than in tornadoes.  Icy road deaths are not counted in official weather statistics.  However, consider that flood deaths in automobiles (which ARE counted) are similar in nature.  Drivers enter water not knowing how bad the danger is.  Awareness efforts for road icing should match that of flooding to help drivers change their behavior.

Tornado a mile from home today.  Unfortunately caused damage to a farmstead.  http://stormhighway.com/blog2014/oct1314a.php
VIDEO: New Baden, IL tornado. Another prolific fall tornado event further validates the Midwest's reputation as a chaseable region year-round. I stuck to my now-standard plan of staying in my home area when there is any tornado risk affecting the St. Louis metro, rather than going on a ...

"Icezilla" is the name being given to a light freezing rain event that crippled the northeast US yesterday. Countless large pileups occurred. An unusual number of accidents were caught on video by local residents. The death toll now up to 6. This event also caused the highest single-day traffic to the icyroadsafety.com site since I launched it in 2008. http://icyroadsafety.com/blog/jan1915a.shtml

Everybody does a new year's "top ten list" blog post these days, so here is mine. 2014 was a well-above-average year for me in terms of compelling imagery and video captured. In fact, several of these were so significant in terms of longtime personal goals that I just can't give any one of them ...

What would NOAA's weather fatalities chart look like IF icy road deaths were counted? THIS. ‪#‎winter‬ ‪#‎accidents‬

Winter weather awareness week starts tomorrow in some states. Icy roads are the number one hazard during the winter months - surpassing all other forms of severe weather combined! Take a free online course on road ice safety at: http://icyroadsafety.com/

One last image from Thursday as the massive storm turns day into night over the city. This is a panorama stitch of ten wide-angle (10mm) frames.  http://stormhighway.com/stlouisphotos/storms_weather/thunderstorms/huge-dark-severe-storm-shelf-cloud-panorama-f-2353p.php
