I wish people would stop watching the "news".  John Oliver explains one of the very many reasons why.

Straight talk about the obvious solution to the country's Intarweb problems: the internet is a utility!

See also, "Money is not speech, it's action," and, "Single-payer healthcare", and, "Prohibition doesn't work."
Here’s a simple truth: the internet has radically changed the world. Over the course of the past 20 years, the idea of networking all the world’s computers has gone from a research science pipe...

It's not a Star Trek communicator at all.  It's an unlimited range walkie talkie for user-defined groups.  This is awesome, but maybe needs another iteration to get the size down.  Keeping my eye on this.
*Beep beep* "Picard to bridge, get us out of here." Like Dick Tracy's watch, Star Trek's communicator has long been a muse for real-world technology products. The Onyx, a new device from hardware...

I'm struggling with this very issue with my daughter now.  The idea of introducing the magic present man is horrible enough, but "elf on a shelf"?  What the hell is wrong with us?

Just say no to magic.

Thank you Richard Dawkins!
Richard Dawkins says parents should not read fairy stories to their children as he claims they are harmful to their education by instilling a false belief in the supernatural

Hmm.  Yeah, whoops.  I may have just fallen prey to a knee jerk reaction.  All I can really say is that I want him to share my opinion.

Thanks, Dan!

So far I'm not loving it.  I just ordered a router with normal one day service.  Amazon is couriering the item themselves, and didn't tell me they would do that before I ordered.

The package "tracking" (such as it is) says it's been "out for delivery" since around 10 pm last night.  I think the Amazon fresh deliveries can come as late as that, so I'm expecting my package waaay later than if they had just sent the thing FedEx.

Also, with FedEx, I have some idea of when they tend to show up at my building.

Not.  Happy.
Amazon isn't waiting for the advent of courier drones to ship your orders faster than usual: the Wall Street Journal reports that the e-commerce giant

Great idea.  Could be awesome if the news they're referring to isn't just stupid gadget news.
Early last year, Melissa Bell, Matt Yglesias and I began wrestling with a question that had bugged all of us for a long time: why hadn't the Internet made the news better at delivering crucial...
