‪#‎TapRoom‬ No Irish Handcuffs of Windows Server Solutions with StarWind Virtual SAN http://bit.ly/1wVpq5i
Date: 19 March, 11 am PT / 2 pm ET
Sometimes the ‪#‎ITcocktails‬ taste much better rather than pure drinks.
Few examples: Arak Typhoon has better aftertaste comparing to pure raki Moscow Mule gets results much faster comparing to pure vodka. Windows Server may be less expensive and more efficient when talking about speed is mixed with ‪#‎StarWind‬.
The only Tap Room where no one will actually eat your peanuts

A Story of Successful Deployment of StarWind Virtual SAN in #Education

We believe that Education and IT always “go together”.  IT, belonging to one of the fastest growing industries, requires intellectual resources, which are mainly supplied by the Education sector. At the same time, the Education sector is fully supported by the newest developments in IT and is unable to progress without deploying its results into the daily activity.

So, one of our Education-related customers, The University of Wisconsin Stevens Point, contacted us because of the necessity to create the highly available virtual storage appliance (5 GB), which could protect the intellectual data for educational and personal purposes.

After experiencing the multiple scenarios, when one of the servers’ storage capacities run out and there was a pressing need of purchasing and bringing online of an extra one, the university IT staff started to look for an alternative solution.

Seeing the excess storage space on some servers, while others were running out of it, the university IT staff decided to go for clustered file server option.

The cost of StarWind plus the flexibility to deploy the Virtual SAN software on any server using any disk drives made StarWind the clear choice for the university. Absence of hardware lock-in and the scalability to keep pace with the growing storage demands were important decision factors to stick with this solution.

As a result, #StarWind optimized the storage capacity, achieved high data availability and saved money for the university IT department!

Please share this Success Story with your community!

Webinar "Scale Out Freely: No Hardware Lock-in"
 http://bit.ly/1EvAXpv

#Scale-out has come up as the technology to meet the constantly increasing demands to storage capacity. Unlike #Scale-up, it allows scaling horizontally. But it also has some caveats. In most cases you need to stick to specific hardware with none or limited configuration options, which is cost- and efforts- consuming. You have to follow only one scenario – “compute and storage separated” or hyper-converged one, which essentially kills the idea of flexibility. The entry price is also an issue since most of the vendors sell minimum 3 hosts, even if you just need 2 for your environment.

Join Max Kolomyeytsev, Product Manager, #StarWind Software Inc., to learn to avoid these caveats and benefit from:

- Scale-out and scale up with NO hardware lock-in

- Scale-out with ANY hypervisor

- Support “compute and storage separated” and hyper-converged scenarios simultaneously

- Asymmentric Scale-out

StarWind Virtual SAN - Hardware-less VM Storage
Introduction

StarWind Software is a pioneer of storage virtualization. It keeps innovating and putting into production solutions built with a revolutionary vision years before these ideas get adopted by the rest of the IT world. Many companies claim doing this but few actually do.

StarWind targets:

  • Visionaries and early adopters who enjoy being the first to deal with a disruptive innovation as well as pragmatics.
  • Early and late majority with their investments protected as soon as the innovation evolves into a sustained one.

StarWind was one of the first to push Software Defined Storage out from the “Test & Development” niche right to the mainstream “Hardcore Production” dominated by hardware storage appliances. Now hardware appliances themselves are becoming more of a niche.

The facts:

  • StarWind eliminated the requirement of a physical shared storage like either SAN/NAS or shared DAS to unlock all the virtualization potential: VM-level high availability, guest VM clusters, migration of a running VM to another hypervisor host, etc. We achieved this by creating virtual shared storage using hard disks, flash memory, and networking already attached to hypervisor hosts. StarWind embedded storage virtualization stack right into hypervisor or host operating system as a native component. Instead of spawning a virtual machine, native approach provides a huge performance boost because virtualization overhead is eliminated. It also dramatically simplifies management because the system administrator now only has one hypervisor or operating system to control. StarWind Software released its product called Native SAN (later rebranded to Virtual SAN) in 2011, and VMware followed with their own Virtual SAN solving the same issue and using pretty much the same architecture only in 2014.
  • StarWind eliminated the need to have whole bunches of SAS hardware, like SAS JBODs, SAS disks, HBAs, and cabling, to build shared storage for Microsoft hypervisor of choice – Hyper-V, Microsoft Scale-Out File Server. StarWind Software made it possible for customers to use high capacity SATA, fast PCIe flash and 40 Gigabit Ethernet in production to build a virtual shared storage for Scale-Out File Server right in 2012. Microsoft followed with Storage Spaces Shared Nothing solving the same issue in the very similar way only in 2015.
  • StarWind Software created flash and parity RAID friendly file system designed “from scratch” to run on all-flash and hybrid configurations rather than “port” old code initially written to support spinning hard disk, something  that the majority of vendors do. StarWind Log-Structured File System (LSFS) combines in-line deduplication, logging, transactions, Redirect-on-Write snapshots for performance and space savings, and strong hashes to protect from silent data corruption. Only NetApp with WAFL has somewhat similar solution but there is no possibility to run it on commodity hardware.

StarWind Software started its life after Round A of investments from ABRT Fund in the late 2008 as a spin-off from Rocket Division Software founded in the early 2003. In 2014, StarWind closed Round B from Almaz Capital, ABRT Fund, and AVentures.
