Japan is poised to introduce a plan that would allow its forces to defend allies for the first time in the post-World War II era, even as polls indicate public opposition to a reinterpretation of the nation’s pacifist constitution.

Advisers to Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s government say the legal maneuvers to end Japan’s ban on engaging in collective self-defense will begin before the end of the national Diet session June 22, despite recent speculation that doubts from the public and some lawmakers within Abe’s ruling coalition would force delays.

As the glow of a successful presidential election fades, a picture is emerging of key post-election procedures taking place in secret and independent observers being kept in the dark while votes are counted and thrown out for irregularities.

The Army’s mental health caseload has doubled since 2007, and Sen. Dick Durbin says the United States is not “up to that challenge” that “may be with us for some time.”

“What we are learning,” the Illinois Democrat said in an interview, “is that the cost of war goes way beyond the end of conflict.”

With tensions rising over Russia’s intervention in Ukraine, a new McClatchy-Marist poll finds Americans are ambivalent over how deeply the United States should be involved in the situation.

American voters largely support only squeezing Russia economically and politically, even as they display strong distrust of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
They give President Barack Obama mixed reviews for his handling of Russia’s move to lop off Ukraine’s Crimea region, but they offer no clear view of how the U.S. should respond to the crisis.

It is unclear how the rebels obtained the wire-guided missiles, which are capable of penetrating heavy armor and fortifications and are standard in the U.S. military arsenal. The United States has sold them in the past to Turkey, among other countries, and the Pentagon approved the sale of 15,000 of the weapons to Saudi Arabia in December. Both countries aid Syrian opposition groups.

At Camp Lemonnier, a former French Foreign Legion post taken over by the U.S. soon after the Sept. 11 terror attacks, military officials now see a base that could be destined for the kind of permanent U.S. military presence found in other parts of the world. That means few tents and container-style housing units and more concrete in the years ahead.
The U.S. military’s operational hub in this strategic Horn of Africa nation still has the lonely dust-swept feel of combat outposts that have come and gone in Iraq and Afghanistan, but something more enduring is taking root in Djibouti as commanders ponder the long-term potential of the military’s core forward base in Africa.

Sgt. Chris Peden is stuck. The Joint Base Lewis-McChord soldier is spending his last months in the Army too damaged to be the gung-ho paratrooper of his first Iraq deployment but not ill enough to be cut loose from his enlistment with his Stryker brigade.

He’s in the limbo of a disability system the Defense Department created seven years ago with good intentions. It was designed to make sure wounded service members smoothly enroll for veterans benefits and start receiving checks within a month of leaving uniform.

There were no bombs to drop, and the skies were not filled with German Messerschmitts intent on shooting them down.

A group of World War II veterans got a rare treat Monday in a short flight in a restored B-17 that transported them back seven decades to a time when they were young men and the world was at war.

Do you think Brad Pitt will make a good McChrystal? Who would you have play him? Who would you have play Obama, Biden, Petraeus? www.stripes.com/1.278077

Or, alternatively, who do you think has done the best portrayal of a senior officer?

Hollywood is going to war again, and this time, Brad Pitt is in charge. Pitt will star as Gen. Stanley McChrystal, the former commander of all Western forces in Afghanistan, in a film adaptation of “The Operators,” the book that chronicles the rise and fall of McChrystal.
