Sometimes you won’t have the option to lift the racket head above the ball prior to playing your shot. When counter dropping, focus on taking the ball as early as you can and using ‘soft hands’ to leave the ball as far up the court as possible.

So much of squash is based around the lunge action, and our ability to get down under control for the shot and then back out rapidly to recover the T.
While most players will generally have a favoured or more dominant leg that they prefer to lunge in on, to be a true all-round athlete it’s important to really focus on balancing your strength across both sides of the body.
The problem with certain gym-based lower body bilateral exercises such as squats and leg presses, is that there can be a tendency in some individuals for the stronger leg to take over and bear the brunt of the load.
It's important then to include plenty of unilateral exercises into your training as well, beyond your standard lunge patterns. Exercises such as step-ups, rear foot elevated split squats, and pistol squats are all great to incorporate into your training to really help make sure both legs are being trained and strengthened evenly.

This week on SquashSkills.com David Palmer examines attacking options on the forehand side. It’s much easier to shorten your swing and add deceptive elements to your game on the forehand side. You can go long or short and straight or cross court from the same setup.

Focus on approaching the ball at 45 degrees in the front corners, it allows you to hide the ball with your body and makes it easier show your opponent that you have the option of going both straight and cross court.

The correct spacing is crucial when it comes to hitting a good volley. Focus on creating enough space so that your shoulder, elbow and wrist are all in a straight line at the point of impact.
