Today’s #TBT features a true Spyderco classic—the C24 BlackHawk! This folding knife was first introduced in 1993 as a smaller counterpart to the C23 Renegade. It featured a clip-point Bowie blade and was one of our first folding knives to be designed without a “hump.” It and the Renegade were also the first knives to feature a 50/50 choil that spans the transition from the handle to the blade. This first-production BlackHawk features an aluminum handle. In 1995, the handle material was changed to textured G-10. Both versions are now rare collector’s items.

Have you ever heard of a “sheepfoot” or “sheepsfoot” blade? It has a blunt tip and a straight cutting edge and derives its name from the fact that it was originally designed to trim the hooves of sheep. Sheepfoot blades are also closely associated with sailors, and legend has it that captains often broke off the points of their sailors’ knives to keep them from stabbing each other during long months at sea. Regardless of how sheepfoot blades came to be, their lack of a traditional point reduces the chance of accidental punctures when used in the rigging of a ship, around inflatable watercraft, and during emergency cutting. You should also know that Spyderco was the first company to combine a sheepfoot blade with a fully serrated edge to pioneer the concept of the modern “rescue knife.” #fascinatingfactfriday!"

Titanium is non-ferrous metal that is lightweight, highly corrosion resistant and very strong. We use it in the handles, liners and other components of our folding knives. However, we thought it was pretty fascinating to learn that this unique metal was actually discovered all the way back in 1791! In 1795 it was rediscovered by a Prussian scientist who named the metal for the Titans of Greek Mythology. Hence the name titanium. #fascinatingfactfriday

Today is International Museum Day! We're not a museum, but did you know that the Spyderco Factory Outlet store has several museum displays? Some displays are significant to our history, others are intriguing, and some hold a special place in our hearts. Have you visited our outlet store?
