Check out the guy in the yellow trainers! Injury waiting to happen or what!?! 😲
.
>>>>>Reality check: He's actually at mile 23 of the Brighton Marathon (video I shot last year) and on target for a 3hr 15 min finish. That's faster than 90% of all entrants...
.
DESPITE what you may hear & read, the idea that in order to reduce risk of running related injury the ankle (subtalar joint) should be ‘neutral’ when the body weight passes over it is NOT supported by any data or evidence. In a study that examined 120 healthy individuals both non weight-bearing and weight-bearing, not one subject conformed to the criteria of “neutral” alignment. The whole concept of 'overpronation' is fraught with inaccuracies.
.
So, if you're running this Sunday at BM 2018, go forth & run how YOU run best. What works for you may be better than what any text book dictates.

Wearing a brace or kinesiotape whilst running can sometimes be useful but can also be detrimental. It may help you get from A to B but it is unlikely to be dealing with the root of the problem and can even cause you to develop a reliance. I go into more detail in a response a readers email in the monthly @runnersradar magazine 'Running' (sold in WHSmith). You can also read my response in the link below. http://www.sportinjurymatt.co.uk/brace-kinesio-tape

Q: "I have been running for about two years and am happy to say I have so far avoided any serious issues. But I have noticed recently a bit of pain in my ankles and have been told it could be because my trainers need changing. The trainers look ok but the advice I was given was if you have run over 250 miles you should change your shoes. Other websites say 500 miles, so I am a little reluctant to buy another pair yet. Is there a guide for knowing when it’s time to change trainers?"
.
Questions like these answered every month by me in @runnersradar Running magazine & online.

Runners buying a new pair of shoes often find themselves being recommended some ‘superior’ insoles to replace those that come with the trainers. How effective are these insoles? And how does one decide which to buy?

Questions considered in this piece I wrote for +RunnersConnect https://runnersconnect.net/custom-insoles-for-runners/

Many runners who visit me for Gait Analysis believe I'm going to tell them the perfect shoe for their needs. It often comes as a shock to hear that the traditional 'do you overpronate' system of prescribing footwear bears no scientific credibility whatsoever.

In a nutshell, having someone watch you run on a treadmill is NOT a reliable way of choosing shoes. So what is?

Good question, and one that I address in this piece I wrote for @RunnersConnect. https://runnersconnect.net/choosing-the-right-running-shoes/

For up-to-date info on the relationship between foot mechanics & injury/pain, make sure you follow Ian Griffiths at http://www.sportspodiatryinfo.co.uk/blog/ (available via Instagram & Twitter too), particularly if you are a health care professional who realises that what we were taught ten years ago (or in some cases still taught!) is no longer accurate. To be an effective therapist, evolving from traditional doctrine & methodology is paramount.
