Last week Jacob Schrum, assistant professor of computer science, was in Madrid attending the Genetic and Evolutionary Computation Conference. He presented his paper titled, "Solving Interleaved and Blended Sequential Decision-Making Problems through Modular Neuroevolution," which describes some of his work using artificial evolution in a computer to discover intelligent behavior in the video game of Ms. Pac-Man. In this photo he's pictured at Plaza de Castilla. #PiratesAbroad http://ow.ly/i/bQaJv

Last month, eight Southwestern students participated in an interdisciplinary course in Cuzco, Peru, the capital of the Inca Empire. Students engaged in courses that cross-list anthropology, art history, history, philosophy, and religion...and did plenty of sight-seeing. #PiratesAbroad

SU graduate Natalia Rodriguez '15 was the only recipient from a liberal arts college. “We’re not only recognizing these women for their leading-edge innovations, we’re recognizing them as role models who can inspire younger girls with their exciting, real-world technical achievements,” says National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT) CEO and Co-Founder Lucy Sanders. http://swu.mobi/1eCLHwF

Tolly Moseley '04 says what mattered to her most was “definitely my relationships with my professors and the cozy, curious community.” Now the co-host of the Austin American-Statesman podcast "Statesman Shots,” Moseley says the Southwestern faculty helped her develop an inspired mastery of language. “They treated me as a fellow intellectual and their passion inspired me. That was profoundly formative.” http://swu.mobi/1wqImlC

Great academics and faculty. I'll always have good memories of the beautiful campus, especially those days when we sat outside for class. Biggest (obvious) complaint is it's very expensive. It's turning out to be worth it so far in my early career though. Love Southwestern!

I'm currently a Senior at Southwestern and have really loved my time spent here! I came to SU with no idea what I would study, thinking maybe Education, and now am finishing a Chemistry degree with plans to go on to grad school in biological sciences. I think the main reason that my career plans changed so much was due to the small class sizes and encouraging and challenging professors. Although the tuition is high, Southwestern offered me very good scholarships and my financial aid increased when the tuition increased. Work study has also been another good way that I've worked my way through college. And because SU is small, it's very easy to communicate with the business and financial aid offices. Something you should also consider is whether or not you want a liberal arts education- for me, I loved having to try classes in many departments and have spent considerable amounts of time with the Music Department even though I'm a science major. That's one of the beautiful aspects of SU, you can be interested in many different things and have the opportunity to pursue them without as many restrictions as at larger schools. The campus is really beautiful (especially the Chapel), there are a lot of friendly people (everyone's favorite is the cafeteria lady, Ella), there are the community bikes, Pirate bikes, that get you to class quicker (if you can find one), and the education is challenging, so expect a lot of work load... But to sum up- Southwestern is a lovely school with great students and professors and has been a great place for me to discover more about myself.

im very happy i chose to go to school here. the professors are great and always available to meet with students. faculty and staff are always friendly and helpful. the only downside is that is is very small and so everyone knows everything about everybody else. on the plus side the small environment helps to create lasting bonds and reduce risk of on campus danger.
