Sarojini Naidu (13 February 1879 - 2 March 1949)  also known  as the Nightingale of India, was a child prodigy, Indian independence activist and poet. She was the first woman to become the governor of an Indian state.

A stanza from her poem Coromandal Fishers:
Rise, brothers, rise, the wakening skies pray to the morning light.
The wind lies asleep in the arms of the dawn like a child that has cried all night.
Come, let us gather our nets from the shore and set our catamarans free,
To capture the leaping wealth of the tide, for we are the sons of the sea.

Her birthday is celebrated as Women's Day all over India.

Preventing Swine Flu - Prevention is better than cure and now that Swine Flu cases are on the rise,  do follow proactive measures so that one is not a victim to the deadly disease.
Most important - Please restrict going into crowded places such as restaurants, malls and theaters.
We also request you to keep your families  informed about preventive measures and ensure that they are followed.

Wishing everyone a Happy Makar Sankranti, Uttarayan, Maghi, Pongal, Magh Bihu, Shishur Saenkraat, Makara Vilakku Festival and Khichdi.

Makar Sankranti (Uttarayana, Jan 14) is one of the most auspicious days for the Hindus. Makar Sankranti marks the transition of the Sun into Makara rashi (Capricorn) on its celestial path and is a major harvest festival. Owing to the vast geography and diversity of culture in India, this festival is celebrated for innumerable reasons and in innumerable ways depending on the climate, agricultural environment, cultural background and region.

Pongal is a major festival of Tamil Nadu. It is celebrated on Makar Sankranti

In Tamil, the word Pongal means "overflowing" which signifies abundance and prosperity. On the day of Pongal, at the time of sun rise there is a symbolic ritual of boiling fresh milk in  new clay pots until the milk boils over and bubbles out of the vessel. Being a harvest festival, the animals important in agriculture are honored and fed.

May this Pongal brings abundance of happiness in our lives!
