I've been asked to describe what I do incredibly often. It's hard to describe. Here's one attempt.
Write a poem about a sunrise. Perhaps you'll leap straight in, and start writing freeform verse. Perhaps you'll choose a style; a haiku, or a limerick? Something using iambic pentameter or rhyming couplets? Your choice of app...

It turns out that the term "monorepo" is pretty unusual. Thought I'd blog a definition of it.
What is a monorepo? It's a unified source code repository used by an organisation to host as much of its code as possible. This is the pattern followed by companies such as Google, Facebook and the BBC, and is the way that I ...

Goals I have for this company #203: monorepo. Admittedly we have a fair heterogeneous codebase, but that's no excuse for using everything from "zip to a folder" to GitHub.

Yet more Breaking the World Into Two Bits For Fun. I used to call them "starters" and "finishers", but now I prefer "pioneers" and "settlers".

I get enough direct emails asking for support with selenium that it'd be handy to have a form response. Hopefully it comes across nicely, but if you have alternative suggestions for wording, please let me know :)
I tend to get a few requests a day asking for help with a problem with Selenium. I almost never reply to these. It's not (just!) because I'm an evil minded, grumpy so-and-so, but because it's not a great use of anyone's time...

Sometimes, I think that people don't realize how much tech Facebook has developed and written. The TAO framework is a really interesting example:

Facebook Engineering wrote a note titled TAO: The power of the graph. Read the full text here.

Recently, I've had a few too many things on my plate to deal with, and have been flirting with burn out, so it's time to take stock and stop being an idiot. In order to stop doing something, one must understand the things tha...

Can someone at Google do a refresh of Closure-Templates? It uses the antiquated guava-12. Either shade that thing or update to Guava 18, please!

I use this analogy all the time at work. Time to share it with The World.

it's a disagreement of developers. Just so you know.

And with plainsmen, at any time after they pick up the turd you can see it, because they're constantly waving it in your face. You don't have to see them pick it up to know there's a turd being waved under your nose. Hopefully.

So I can do android dev work on a pure 64-bit machine and OS? That is, I don't want to install the 32 bit runtimes.

Some notes on working with a distributed team. In hindsight, these feel obvious, but it's taken me a while to realise that not everyone has the same hindsight I do.
At work I'm part of a distributed team. Two colleagues and I are based in London, and the rest of the team is in Menlo Park, California. It's been reminding me of some lessons that I've learnt over the years about working as ...

Enjoying this far too much:

Don't Leave Me This Way (Extended Version) - Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes

Amazed that it goes on for 11 minutes. That's the same length as The End by the Doors. Still got it on loop.
