The spectacular Spouting Horn blowhole, one of the most photographed spots on Kauai.

Ancient Hawaiians believed this coastline was once guarded by a giant moo (lizard) named Kaikapu. Everyone was afraid of the moo because it would eat anyone who tried to fish or swim in the area. One day, a young boy named Liko entered the ocean to outwit the lizard. Kaikapu attacked him, but Liko thrust a sharp stick into her mouth, swam under the lava shelf, and escaped through a small hole to the surface. The moo followed Liko and got stuck in the lava tube. To this day, you can hear the lizard’s roar and see her breath spraying from the blowhole.

In 1821 a whaling ship named Two Brothers set sale from Nantucket. As the crew was on its way to newly discovered whaling grounds near Japan tragedy struck in the Hawaiian Islands. The night of February 11th, 1823 the Two Brothers hit a shallow reef and quickly broke apart in the heavy surf (the ships crew was rescued). A piece of the wreckage was recovered and carved into two pieces to commemorate the voyage. They are called Moku and Kea (The Two Brothers).

Through April 18th Moku and Kea will be hidden around the. We invite children under the age of 11 to find Moku and Kea and claim a reward from the front desk.

This #AlohaFriday we are saying mahalo to Gene, who is retiring after 40 years of service at Sheraton Kauai. After sharing his #aloha with our ‘ohana and visitors alike, we expressed our aloha back to Gene by presenting him with leis as a symbol of love and friendship, which he wore on his last day. In this way, Gene says #AlohaIs the circle of life. From greeting new friends to saying “a hui hou” (until we meet again) to friends of old.

A perfect example of being in the right place at the right time. One of our guests was able to capture and share this photo with us. Can you see the heart in the clouds?

This #AlohaFriday, we're featuring Doug Waiamau, the Sheraton Kauai's Assistant Director or Finance, who, despite often working behind the scenes at the resort, arguably has the most resounding "Alooooha!" when he greets you.

When asked what #AlohaIs to Doug, he said, "Explaining what aloha is, is like explaining what love is. The closest thing for me would be 'Ohana (family). I share my Aloha by treating others how I would like to be treated, with respect and love."
