Writing tests first? Running all tests every time I commit? Join us as we show, by example, how to use TDD to write better, more confident code.

We will use Ruby, RSpec and Rubocop to demonstrate Test Driven Development (TDD), but prior knowledge of these specific tools isn't necessary. Our focus will be on the process of TDD and its benefits. The talk will explain answers to several TDD questions, including:

* Who benefits from TDD - it's not just the developer!

* What kinds of tests you can write - unit tests vs. integration tests

* Where to put your tests - directly in your source repository

* When to use TDD - throughout the software lifecycle

* Why TDD is an improvement, and why you weren't taught this when you first learned to code

* How TDD really works in practice - iterate, iterate, iterate!

An Introduction to Modern Methods Using Modern Database and Data-Analysis Tools to Solve Modern Problems. Some view NoSQL as the cool new "automagic" solution to solve all database problems.  Others consider it to be much ado about nothing — a buzzword invented by hipsters to pad their résumés.

The truth is far more nuanced and subtle:  NoSQL is actually a family of several different DBMS types, each of which focuses on a specific use case.  Eddy Dreger explains the fundamental philosophical difference underlying NoSQL versus SQL, discusses different flavors of NoSQL, and walks through the design and construction of a NoSQL database for a Web application.

Quick Talk: Cross Platform SQL Tricks by Matt Conrad

We will be covering some SQL tricks which are handy and somewhat less known to people who don't live in a query window. All of the SQL here is cross platform and will work on at least SQL Server, PostgreSQL, and MySQL.
