A pink flatworm-like animal known by a single species found in waters off Sweden has puzzled biologists for nearly six decades. New discoveries half a world away by a team of scientists from Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego, the Western Australian Museum, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) have helped properly identify these elusive creatures through genetic analysis.

Field campaign will help scientists predict future climate
A team of scientists including geochemists from Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego is launching a series of research flights this month over the remote Southern Ocean in an effort to better understand just how much carbon dioxide the icy waters are able to lock away.

The California Current is home to many marine animals, including marine fishes, which are the most diverse vertebrates on Earth and critical to marine ecology.  Two fishery-independent data sets reveal strikingly similar trends of wide-ranging declines in fish populations in the California Current.

Researchers uncover nanostructures in exoskeleton of blue-haired tarantulas
Scientists recently discovered that tiny, multilayer nanostructures inside a tarantula's hair are responsible for its vibrant color. The science behind how these hair-raising spiders developed their blue hue may lead to new ways to improve computer or TV screens using biomimicry.

Groundbreaking discoveries at Scripps inspire solutions to some of the greatest environmental challenges we face today.
Introduction

A department of UC San Diego, Scripps Institution of Oceanography is one of the oldest, largest, and most important centers for ocean, Earth and atmospheric science research, education, and public service in the world. Research at Scripps  encompasses physical, chemical, biological, geological, and geophysical studies of the oceans, Earth, and planets.  Scripps undergraduate and graduate programs provide transformative educational and research opportunities in ocean, Earth, and atmospheric sciences, as well as degrees in climate science and policy and marine biodiversity and conservation.

The Scripps Fleet of four oceanographic research vessels and the research platform FLIP make up one of the largest academic fleets in the world.  A new ocean-class research ship that will be operated by Scripps on behalf of the Office of Naval Research is under construction and will join the fleet in 2015.
