At Scotts LawnService and Scotts Miracle-Gro, we believe in the power of giving back to the communities where our associates live and work. The belief stems from Horace Hagedorn, the founder of Miracle-Gro, and his conviction that, “You can’t keep taking away from the earth. You must give something back.”
Our Scotts LawnService associates are heavily involved in the neighborhoods where we live and work, which has created a culture of community service at the company. We believe participating in community service fosters teamwork and promotes leadership and skill development.
This Spring, a team of associates from Scotts LawnService Headquarters- based on Marysville, Ohio, volunteered at the Furniture Bank of Central Ohio. The Furniture Bank of Central Ohio is a truly amazing place. Their goal is simple: provide FREE FURNITURE to central Ohio families and individuals struggling with poverty and other severe life challenges. They rely on volunteer support to help serve families in need.
In 2013 alone, the Furniture Bank of Central Ohio served over 4,100 Central Ohio families. With this many people in need of their services, myself and 7 other members of the Scotts LawnService Marketing Department decided this was the perfect place to volunteer (despite the fact that a few of us hadn’t picked up a power tool since high school woodshop class).
Our mission that day? Build twin-sized wooden bed frames. Together, we worked to cut and sand lumber, drill holes, assemble and paint. A few hours and a several Band-Aids later, we stood back and took count: 14 bed frames. It may not sound like a lot- but if you consider that right this very second, 14 more of our neighbors have a safe and comfortable place to rest, having just built one bed frame would have made the whole experience worthwhile. As quickly as we made them, they were loaded on a cart and whisked out of the woodshop and into the lives of a family in need. Not bad for a day’s work!
