"Five of them went out on the water that night. None came back whole, and not all of them came back.” That’s author Paul Griffin’s 140-character description of his new book, ADRIFT. (Are the hairs on the back of your neck standing up straight or is it just us?) We sat down with the author for a Q&A about his writing process and his childhood spent reading.

We're excited to have a Q&A on the edu@scholastic blog today with Chirlane McCray, First Lady of New York City. We asked her about the 2-year book distribution initiative she kicked off last week as a part of the city's Talk to Your Baby campaign. We're proud to participate! #talktoyourbaby

Clearly some great ideas. As a Reading Specialist, I can talk with children all year long about reading over the summer months, but parents are the ones who are with the children, and really need to step up and help their children follow through. I would add #6 which would be sitting and reading with your child. If your child is well on his way to reading on his own, then sit beside him while he's reading, and read your own summer reading books. This will encourage your child to read even more, and to help your child increase reading stamina which is vital towards success in school. Have fun.

Greetings,

Read Where You Are day should be every day. If we were to increase the amount of time children, teens, and adults read every day, then we would also increase our overall level of academic successes.
