Silicon Valley Community Foundation is using applied design thinking to better deliver information to people in interactive, easy-to-use ways. To me this feels like a government--to-community  information gap that has always existed but is now being filled for the first time, mostly due to to the Web and advances in design thinking. Please give a read on Knight Digital Media Center, share and comment. http://bit.ly/16A9Cc6

My latest topper on innovation in news published on LinkedIn Pulse.
Although the news industry is famously known for being shattered by the Web, what's not commonly understood is the amount of innovation taking place not only at legacy news sites but also in an emerging independent sector. In my most recent post for Knight Digital Media Center, ...

My latest post for the Communitynews3.0 blog at Knight Digital Media Center is about a creative mashup of Art+Science+Journalism  geared to engage the audience at a deeper level while expanding reach into new facets of the community.
News outlets battling audience tune-out when they report on climate change and other hard-to-hear-about subjects might find an inspired approach for engagement in After Water, an innovative series by WBEZ Chicago Public Radio. The series featured science-based journalism, fiction by local ...

Patti Smith, accompanied by Tony Shanahan and her son, Jackson Smith, at the Old Town School of Folk Music, tells the story of her Jerry Garcia vision, the origin of the song Grateful and then sings it. It was an evening in memory of friends, loved ones and those admired who have passed away. A day of remembrance and a celebration of life. Recorded with my iPhone in the last row center at 8 pm show, Nov 2.

Progress on the local news front.
A news desert is a place, often a neighborhood in a city, but it could be a rural area, where there is limited access to local news and information. News desert conditions can arise because of cutbacks in local media — such as a shuttered newspaper — or these conditions can be longstanding because the community has not been included in coverage by news outlets. Because news and information deserts are bad for the civic life of a place, they have ...

t's been seven years since I wrote this Christmas column as the Real Estate Editor for the The Chicago Sun-Times. It was influenced by the big swooshing sound of the air being let from that particular Real Estate bubble. Now in 2014, for some of us, it's time to be grateful that our personal economies have improved considerably, for others that recovery has not quite happened yet. Although I've seen several real estate bubbles in my life, this last one was different. It was one in which real estate led the downturn. Other mighty forces at work - such as technology - have made this recovery unpredictable. So for all of my friends - those on the upturn or those still in queue for those better times, I send happy thoughts of a holiday season grounded in good cheer, one in which you are steeped in the caring of family and the well wishes of your circle of friends. Blessings to you every one.

In this cacophony that is the Web, some dedicated individuals are clearing a path to report for their communities. It's the work of Democracy undertaken by a community foundation and news start-ups. They're the peeps I write about for Knight Digital Media Center. Today I have three blogs in one about an exciting partnership in New Jersey seeking the tools and right approach to stave off a media desert. Read and share, please http://ow.ly/FZdIV #journalism #communitynews

Favorite things to write about: Possibilities, disruption and evolution
Chicago Tribune's 435Digital hired me to cover social media's evolution. Future of News expert Michele McLellan contracted with me to report on local independent online news sites for BlockxBlock, and to work with the website and community. Currently, I am writing about community news for The Knight Digital Media Center. I have primarily been a business editor and writer, producing hundreds of special reports and articles for the Chicago Sun-Times and in newsrooms at Crain CommunicationsThe Wall Street Journal and TIME Magazine. I've also done C-Suite business communications, including grant writing and speeches.

For some adventure in late 2012, I deployed as a digital communications strategist in FEMA External Affairs working on Hurricane Sandy recovery efforts in New Jersey.

Past: Real Estate Editor, Chicago Sun-Times. Aide to Mayor RIchard M. Daley.  Managing Editor, Crain's City&State.
