I had turned up to fulfill a promise made exactly a year ago to , in which I pledged to him my support to help improve his organization organization. I'd like to think that in a small way I was able to acheive this.
One of the more bizarre moments involved a hand-written protestation, a scan of which is attached to this post. These four pages of hand-written screed were handed out to a few of the newer, younger members - possibly in the hope that we'd join a kind of rebellion.
Feel free to read it, that is if you are willing to enter the heart of darkness - or possibly climb the mountains of madness. Dear reader, you can be the one to judge which metaphor is more appropriate.
In any case, know that it was handed out by an older gent who seemed to take perverse pleasure in gumming up the proceedings with increasingly pointless procedural motions, many of which appeared to be founded in an entirely imaginary version of the organization's constitution.
However, it was mostly as a consequence of good leadership and sensible judgement of the attendees that all but one of the resolutions were overwhelmingly defeated.
That last one, was defeated 28 votes to 28 - a resolution to end the paper distribution of the Ethical Review (except to users who specifically request the more expensive paper version). I'd like to think that given that this was my first ever attendance at Conway Hall, I was that 28th vote that helped defeat the motion.
So on this one occasion I got to make a difference, and keep a promise!
In my spare time I like to make audio features for The Pod Delusion. I occasionally help out with Resonance FM. I have two kids and spend far too much time at work.
I'm interested in all kinds of science, technology and culture-war news.
