Conventional 3D printers create objects layer-by-layer from the bottom up, which can be a challenge when printing parts with enclosed electronics and overhanging or protruding features. +Purdue University's new system called RevoMaker not only reduces the need for supporting structures, but also introduces a new technique for multi-directional printing.
A new system developed by Purdue allows a 3D printer to produce functioning products with enclosed electronic and motorized components and customized devices, for example a computer mouse molded to a user's hand. The new system has been demonstrated by creating items with complex shapes, ...

A team led by researchers from UCLA has created a super-strong yet light structural metal with a very high specific strength and modulus, or stiffness-to-weight ratio. It could be used to make lighter airplanes, spacecraft, and cars, helping to improve fuel efficiency.
“It's been proposed that nanoparticles could really enhance the strength of metals without damaging their plasticity, especially light metals like magnesium, but no groups have been able to disperse ceramic nanoparticles in molten metals until now,” said Xiaochun Li, the principal investigator ...

With the ever-increasing demand for vehicles that produce less harmful emissions and get better gas mileage, automotive OEMs are constantly innovating in their development of hybrid/electric powertrains. But with this innovation comes challenges. In this webcast, we will cover some of the technical differences in these powertrains that require a new hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) test strategy in order to see accurate and useful test results, while also giving an example of how Subaru did exactly this.

Speaker is Noah Reding, Senior Product Manager, Systems and Applications, +National Instruments.

If and when platooning becomes a reality, it could potentially benefit everything from safety and driver comfort to road capacity and the competitive delivery of a company’s product. It could also help vehicle manufacturers deal with future iterations of emission regulations.
Truck platoons mean gained fuel efficiencies. SAE standards J2945 & J2946 address need for data exchange for coordinated maneuvers. Definition of categories should start with differentiating platooning and CACC (Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control).
