When I took this shot several weeks ago, I was perplexed by the the whole thing. I've seen solar halos before, and they're easy to spot because they're literally rainbow colored halos around the sun. But this... Well, the sun was near the horizon, in the bottom part of the picture out of view, and this rainbow image curves in the OPPOSITE direction of the sun! A friend of mine suggested it might be a sun dog, but sun dogs also curve around the sun, not against it.

A fellow photographer said she thought it was a Circumzenithal Arc, or some such name. Well, this was new to me, so I finally started looking for info on it, and she's right!

The following is taken from weather.com's page on "upside down rainbows" or Circumzenithal Arcs:
"Instead of raindrops as in rainbows, CAs result from the refraction of sunlight through plate-shaped ice crystals, typically forming up to a quarter-circle centered on the point in the sky directly above you. In essence, the CA is a type of halo.

For a CA to form, the sun has to be 5 to 32 degrees above the horizon. An angle of about 22 degrees above the horizon gives the optimal brightness, arc length and width for viewing. The CA will always be on the same side of the sky as the sun."

So there you have it, friends! And thanks to Emily for the identification!

It's that time of year again.

I'm doing my annual Ask Mr. Know-It-All schtick whereby I allow students to ask me any two (2) questions. The first question MUST be about the FINAL EXAM. The second question can be about anything (within reason). Mr. Know-It-All, knowing all things, answers each and every question with a little dash of sarcasm and a little dash of love. The really good questions are rewarded with Little Debbie Oatmeal Creme Pies or Nutty Bars. The really bad questions get put in a diaper that I keep next to me (and threaten to make the offending student wear on their head for the rest of the day)

This year's top questions:
- Why is life so challenging when it's really made for us to enjoy?
- When did you lose your virginity?
- Why can't chickens fly but other birds can?
- How will I die?
- (several variations on:) What's the most important thing about life?
- What inspired you to become a teacher and has it helped you grow as a person?
- Do you ever think about giving your nicest, sweetest students extra credit?
- When did you stop wearing shoes?
- Who is your favorite student in 4th period?
- How will this final predict our success in passing to the next grade?
- Who is going to win the NBA Finals?
- What is time?
- As a teacher, do you see yourself as a role model? Because some things you say about your life are used as inspiration in my life.
- Would you think of immortality as a blessing or a curse?
- If you could choose any one thing to bring with you on a deserted island, what would it be and why?
- If I were to ask you to help me rob a bank, and under the very poor chance you would agree, what bank would we rob?
- If the Hulk didn't show up during the fight to save the city at the end of the Avengers, do you think they could still save the world?
- What is the reason of putting us on this earth if we can't control our future or anything? Are we just being tormented like you say, "Shit happens and we can't do shit about it"?
- What color should I dye my hair?
- What's the best song of all time?
- Why don't I really try to succeed; why am I going through life like,  "Whatever."?
- Have you ever read a book and afterwards felt a little paranoid?
- Why can't I think of a question to ask?
- What book should I read for the summer?
- Why do some people's moms and dads desert them?
- What type of condom should I wear?
- What movie should I watch on Netflix?
- What is the proper way to hang the toilet paper: Over or Under?
- Where do you go after you get sucked into a black hole?
- If you know everything, what's my phone number?

It was a good year to be Mr. Know-It-All.

If you are one of those drivers who go out of your way to avoid driving completely over speedbumps (namely, pulling far to the right so that only one side of your car, or two of your four tires, has to go over the hump), I need your help!

Would you comment below and tell me what your theory is on the benefits of doing this? I'm genuinely interested in knowing what your thought process is surrounding this practice.

Thanks in advance!

My friends, rarely have I laughed so hard as when watching Sparky Sweets, PhD summarize, analyze, and analogize Dr. Seuss' The Cat in the Hat in honor of all those mamas who like to go steppin' out.

"It's like, I know you're going to look at me more if my (breasts) are out, so look at me. And then I'm going to tell you about my foundation for an hour and totally hustle you."

- Miley Cyrus, talking about her foundation for homeless / at risk LGBT teens.

I like Miley Cyrus. She gets it.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — When Miley Cyrus wears pasties or posts photos of her pink armpits, it's not to be a provocateur. The 22-year-old says she's just being herself, and she wants all young people

Armed with only sunblock and a camera, I valiantly go forth to shoot the barbarian hoards at PFHS Senior Field Day.

It's a sacrifice, but someone has to do it.

My weekend project was to take those three blocks of raw beeswax, figure out how to process it without burning the house down, then work out a recipe for candles, work the recipe without burning the house down, and become the next homemade candle-making sensation.

I think it worked!

(my side project was to take artsy fartsy photographs of the creative process - also a rousing success)

"I'm angry. I'm tired. I don't enjoy teaching when all the power has been put in the hands of the students who can pretty much do whatever they want with little fear of consequences. I'm tired of fighting cell phones. I'm tired of being given a new list at the beginning of the school year of shit that I am responsible for on top of everything else from previous years. I'm angry that new hires are making a higher rate of pay than I receive after being there for 8 years. I'm tired of my benefits being cut repeatedly. I'm angry that my 'retirement' money is not going to be worth anything after my time in this district. I'm angry at always being tired. I'm tired of always being angry. I'm sick and tired of being told I have to get more and more certifications so that the district can save money by piling more and more students into my classes who are lower and lower every year. I am sick and fucking tired."

My stream-of-consciousness response to a friend asking why I don't want to return to teaching in the fall.

h/t to my dad for the meme.

By far the most spectacular Senior Field Day picture I've ever shot: I don't know this guy's name, but during the kickball tournament he and another teammate couldn't agree on who was going to catch the ball. He ended up getting hit square in the head with the ball as a result, and what a shot.

To the left of his head? His glasses.
To the left of his glasses? Yes, those are the individual lenses popping out and flying.
To the right? The ball bouncing away from his head.

Epic.
