Abandoned

Shot near dawn this past Sunday morning at an abandoned mansion in Pensacola, FL.

Seemingly endless possibilities of lighting, perspective, angles, and concepts present themselves in this massive house. I've done four shoots there recently and have at least two more scheduled. But the truth is, I could stay in this place all day and be perfectly content with three cameras and an endless bag of film.

I've done four shoots in the last three weeks at this abandoned mansion in Pensacola, FL. and I've not even begun to scratch the surface of possible angles, lighting, poses, and concepts. The mansion has been empty for 1-2 years, but I'm afraid that as more photographers are going in (myself included, and perhaps the worst offender recently), the neighbors in this posh subdivision will have to put their collective foot down and stop allowing us easy access.

For now, though, I have two more shoots scheduled over the next week, and one possible for later in the month.

Christ Figure

Shot in an abandoned mansion in Pensacola, FL using a Graflex Speed Graphic w/Graphex Optar 135mm 4.7 lens and Ilford Delta 100 film.

I've only had the opportunity to shoot a dozen frames with this camera, so I'm still learning the ropes (and having a difficult time with focusing using the glass and a loupe - may need to replace the ground glass or remove the fresnel lens finder behind the glass - something's making it very dark), but I'm pleased with the results so far.

Kenzie had been on the shelf for a long while and was getting tired, so I did not utilize any of the cameras movements to fine-tune the focus.

Confidence, Strength, and Beauty

These were three of many words I'd use to describe Bethany. We met up earlier this week and did a short but fun shoot on the campus of University of West Florida using my new Graflex Speed Graphic large format camera.

I don't have any stories of negotiating a purchase from someone and having the seller's counteroffer come back significantly lower than my offer (which was already lower than the original asking price).

Until a couple weeks ago.

This beautiful Graflex Speed Graphic Model FP large format camera popped up on Craigslist Mon evening - $200 was the asking price, with the line 'Make me an offer' tagged on the end of it.

I've been having a blast shooting medium format for the past two years. And of course the next step in the film photography arena is large format.

But it's expensive. The cameras. The film. Developing the film. Expensive. But the pictures and capabilities are amazing. And Graflex has a history of making incredible large format cameras that are actually portable, and this was necessary for me.

We exchanged several text messages thru the day Tues and he offered to bring the camera over to me on Wed. After checking out my photography website, he told me that he and his mom were very flexible on the price, which I thought was strange to be telling me before I'd even seen the camera.

While I broke the camera down to inspect each element, Chuck told me about his dad being stationed in Vietnam during the war, and that this camera was used to take pictures during his time over there. He said he listed it on Craigslist in the hopes that someone who could clean the camera up and get it working would respond to it.

And as fate would have it, someone did.

The camera is beautiful. It's not perfect and it's required some work, but it's exactly what I was hoping to be able to acquire, and I've done cleaning, lubing, and adjustments on dozens of cameras like this one. $200 was more than a fair price for this thing, but with the work needed on it, I lowballed my offer, expecting a slightly higher counter, and would use the difference towards materials for the repairs.

So when he came back with an even lower number, telling me that his mom told him to offer it to me at that price... well, I about fell out of my seat.

Grateful, excited, humbled, I pound this story out, to share with you the following: There are some really awesome strangers out there. I don't even know Chuck's last name, but this was a heck of an awesome way to start off 2017 for both of us.

Thanks, Chuck.
